Leaving the app open isn't really an issue for me as the phone is already in the center armrest. I never touch my phone anyway while driving (neither should anyone else lol).

my spotify app does not need to be on and locked for it to work in the cradle with an iPhone 6.

also - the email issue has been discussed ad nauseum with solutions posted. you need to kill your email app before starting the car and emails (for me, Gmail only, not enterprise emails) come through. texts always work.
