Edit: A lot of butt hurt E9x owners in here. N54 was a solid motor, but BMW dropped it in favor of a single twin scroll turbo which had even less lag, VALVETRONIC (improved throttle response at low RPM's, improved mileage and emissions), and a flatter torque curve (max torque came on earlier too, and power didn't drop off as soon).

So those who are claiming that the N54 had "more power" are obviously clueless. Nor is it more "robust".
Actually when I went to the 4 series event last year hosted by AutoWeek the BMW engineer said to my face that the N54 made more power, but the N55 now has the ability to make just as much. The change was made for efficiency. (I am a former N54 owner)
