That's what I figured and mentioned in a previous post, the 400 end of a 100-400 with a 2.0x TC won't AF even on a 1DX.
I think to get 800mm w/ AF I'd need a better lens than the 100-400 or even the 400 f/5.6; not exactly sure. If I end up with a 1DX and a 500mm I'd need to carry the 6D around for "normal" shots!

Unfortunately this last race weekend was kind of heavy on crashes and red flags. One of the riders had to be air-lifted (we know him) so I got some shots of the "Trauma Hawk" helicopter that flew in, landed on the track, and then took off to the hospital. This shot is the Trauma Hawk taking off with injured rider already inside.
