The N55 is already showing to be much less susceptible to this. Most N55 owners who have pulled their manifolds to do the walnut blast (myself included) have found the ports to be pretty clean with only light carbon powder buildup.
The PCV system is what is responsible for this buildup. The N54's PCV system was quite poor at properly separating out oil vapor and residue before injecting it into the intake tract. Also, it injected post turbo whereas the N55 injects in the ports themselves. Adding to this is the valvetronic system that results in no vacuum pressure in the intake manifold and a constant gas flow through the intake ports.
All of this adds up to a pretty effective system that reduces the carbon buildup in the intake ports.
