Interesting that you joke about this because actually, in a way, the E46 M3 CSL was supposed to be a spiritual successor to the E9 CSL.
The E46 M3 CSL was probably as close as BMW ever got to producing a contemporary interpretation of the E9.
If you think about it, from a historical point of view, it was also the last BMW coupe to directly descend (in terms of evolutionary design language) from earlier BMW coupes of the Neue Klasse. Little design cues like the straight-cut, body line running from the headlight to the door handle to the tail lights that runs parallel with the ground & other body lines, the pronounced, rounded wheel arches that contrast from the boxy, straight-cut lines, the window switches on the center console, the rear windows that open (albeit only vented on the E46) & the overall proportions & shape are shared by the "pre-bangle" era.
Remember also, prior to the E46 M3, the now famous side gills were not characteristic of BMWs. It was revived for the E46 M3 as a throwback to the E9.
