F13 6er replaces the E31 8 series in the market place and if that's what you mean, I understand.
But 6 series is not at the same level as Mercedes CL, especially when you consider the price, size, and engines in those cars.

When BMW introduced 8 series, they insisted the car wasn't a successor of 6 series, but a brand new class. Size was the same, but 8 series was much more expensive and had bigger engines.
So they can't say now that the obviously downgraded 6 series is "equivalent" of 8 series, albeit filling in the market.

But I'm really glad BMW is working on and planning on more higher end models.
I know affluent people prefer higher-end Mercedes and BMW might not sell well, but they have to start somewhere
I hope they don't introduce a model then 1 generation/7 years later, bow out with weak excuses like "economy was bad so we didn't sell well"
100% of truly higher end BMW's have never lasted over a single generation, M1, Z8, 8 Series.
