Ha! It's no "secret", but once you're around here for a bit, you do start learning and using the model designations like second nature...
E30 = 1st gen M3
E36 = 2nd gen M3
E46 = 3rd gen M3
E9x = 4th gen M3 (90 is sedan, 92 is coupe, 93 is convertible)
