They don't...
That use to be BMW M-Division's job... but since M-Division is just a Marketing arm of BMW.. there is little engineering going on. Just software tuning.

BMW uses the same inline-6 for everything. There is no M-Group anymore, no special cars, just fender flairs.
The M2 will be a M235i with Carbon Fiber & fender flairs..
