Incredibly late, but for others wondering:

Everyone's body is different. For me, I've found that starchy, complex carbs about 1-1.5 hours before a workout give me the best pump and the most amount of sustained energy. This is going to be your sweet potato, rice, etc.

Again, everyone's body responds differently to various foods. I have a pretty fast metabolism, so I can eat right before a workout and not feel lazy or too full to workout. But, I'm confident that it's true for everyone that starchy, complex carbs, like I mentioned, will provide the most amount of sustained energy to power you through your workout...that's simply the function of these carbs, and how your body utilizes it.
