Someone beat me to it but the reality is that cars have gotten much heavier. An X3 also runs on glorified car tires, not beefy suv tires, so there is simply less meat to begin with. Combine that with the stiffer sidewall of the RFTs and you have a recipe for increased rubber consumption.

On my 135i, the lightest of the BMW coupes, my stock summer tires were completely bald at turn-in and I swapped wheels/tires each winter. They probably had 15k on them. I was actually pretty impressed.

I only mention this for laughs but my Lotus Exige, which weighed 1,980 lbs, went through a set of Yokohama Advan A048s in less than 6k.
