Canon 24-105mm replacement?

I've had my 24-105mm for quite some time, and I've enjoyed it. However, I took my 70-200mm f/4L out this past weekend (it's been in my bag for a while) and was amazed how quickly the AF locked and how immensely sharp my photos were. My keep rate was very high, only missing a handful of photos.

Which begs the question: is the 70-200mm f/4L simply a better lens, or is it time to look at a replacement for my 24-105mm?

Three quick 70-200mm examples. Straight out the camera, just resized.

I just sold my trusty old 24-105 today. Sold it to a colleague for a song because he's a good guy and has done a few things for me. I'll be buying the V2 24-105 in the spring.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I'll start looking at the 24-70mm II. I hadn't heard of the 24-105mm II coming out in the spring, but that's good to know. Might be good to start looking to get rid of the 24-105mm now before prices further drop.

I have the 50mm F/1.2L as well, which I really like. And eventually, I'd like to upgrade the 70-200mm F/4L to the 70-200mm F/2.8L IS II.

if full frame body already, maybe upgrade to 24-70ii

if not full frame body, that should be next as the L lenses aren't so much intended for cropped sensors.

It does seem from all I've read the 24-70 is a good choice. Can you rent one locally to try it out? Just to be sure it's better.

I like my 24-105, because it's a "pretty decent" lens and the range is perfect for me walking around getting typical shots. And it was a good price / value.

Any chance your 24-105 has an actual problem? What sort of apertures are you using? Something like 5.6 usually gives best sharpness, best test is on a tripod (turn off IS), bonus if your tripod is heavy or weighted.

Good idea on going to my local camera shop and trying it out. It's not that I think my 24-105mm has a problem, but I just feel like the 70-200mm produces sharper photos, focuses quicker and locks on perfectly 95% of the time.

Sure. 70-200's are stellar lenses with a great reputation for a reason.

I think the 24-70 is a solid lens but it's probably between the 24-105 and 70-200. I'd definitely try it out before buying. Hopefully it's what you want but be sure first.

(This is based on tons of reading in the past, I haven't used the 24-70 myself but I have used the other 2 lenses)

I too have a 70-200 F4, it's the IS version and you're right, it's pin sharp.

I also have a 24-70 F4 which is just as good and recently purchased a 16-35 F4 which is probably my new favourite. It's unbelievably sharp with very impressive IS (I was getting pin sharp photos at 16mm while very drunk with an exposure of 2 seconds)
