The R32 had a completely different engine than the GTI where this is essentially a tuned variant (with a larger turbo). The AWD system is far from stellar as well and many people feel that it handles more like FWD than a true AWD. My fully loaded (ex Nav) 5dr GTI was $28k, a very steep price for a hot hatch but also a cut above in interior look (I won't say quality as most VWs wear heavily after 5+ years). This car is nearly $10k more? It's my belief that it should have topped out at $35k with the 3dr at $33k at most. I love the look of VWs and loved my GTI but at $40k after taxes, steep is an understatement.

35k less 5k=$30k

If every other R Product golf before this cost more than 30k (one of them 8 years ago BTW)how could you have thought this one would cost less than an 8 year old model did new. Thats the part that confused me. It is expensive thats for sure I am not arguing that at all but high 30's for the evo with leather and loaded is very overpriced also IMO. To me those 2 cars show what a great deal a Mustang GT is. I know its a totally different car but its still less than the other cars.

That's all you're mad about? I have since clarified my price talk. You're getting worked up like you priced this car yourself!

The Golf and Mini are both great bang for buck fun cars to drive. I really like the spacious cabin in the Golf. I agree the R32 seems expensive but these models do hold on to their value pretty well.

Maybe a used R32 would be the way to go?

While many GTI's sticker for close to $30k, most don't sell for sticker. Aside from Haldex, what does the US Golf R add over an Autobahn package GTI? There certainly doesn't appear to be $7k worth of difference. Our version doesn't get the seats, LED tail lights or suspension of the Euro version, so why is it so expensive? If the base were around $32k and the fluffed up versions were closer to $34k, this might make sense, but the current pricing totally misses the mark.

Not really, we typically can buy European cars at nearly parity with the Euro, the Golf R just isn't playing along.

It's a very low volume car so they have to make it up somewhere.
