Yes, cold start even quieter with the cold start turned off (tune). The other thing I also noticed is the kangaroo hop at start up and the hesitation is no longer present.

I am well P. How's the car going? I am trying out M1 over winter/spring to see what the readings are. I am beginning to do a lot more short trips, and my driving is mainly city. Hope all is well at your end

Anyone noticed, but the M1 0W-40 is burning quite fast in my car... checked for leaks but nothing. I put in M1 around 6k km ago (approx. 3700miles), made sure it was filled to max line. After maybe 3-4k km later, i was approaching minimum level, so i topped it up to max again. Now, the oil level dropped down to the middle again.
Is it me, or does this thing burn FAST. Or is it suppose to be like this since i just switched over. Used it in my tuned 335i (which is notorious for burning oil due to turbos and tunes etc) and it never burned THIS fast. I overkill my oil changes, car due for change when it hits 7-8k km. Will do a blackstone report then as well.

For you guys burning too much oil with Mobil, try a high quality 5w-40 LL-01 approved oil instead. Mobil tends to be on the lighter side of 40 weight oils. I switched to a 5w-40 and it definitely helped.

Mine has not burned anything significant. My oil gauge is still pegged at max. Only driven about 800 miles.

I read in the owners' handbook, using a diffrent oil to 10w-60 may not give an accurate oil level reading. Why would that be? Oil is oil, and does the sensor pickup the different viscosity of the oil. I think think this another BMW BS about oil

^ The dielectric constant of the M1 vs TWS will be different so the oil wear/quality sensor will probably not read correctly. I'm pretty sure they apply a small voltage and read the Dielectric constant to determine oil wear/quality.
As far as oil level it shouldn't make a difference unless its more than just a simple level check.

what's wrong with mine, it dropped by another level today again guessing it might be the weather warming up as well? During the cold winter'ish days it still drops, but not as fast. Will give it a go for the next oil change (have around 6500km on the oil, will change it out when it is around 7500km) again and see if it is still that bad.
Checked for leaks again just to be sure, but nothing. =/

One thing for sure, the M1 0w-40 warms up a lot faster than TWS. The other night when I started the car the oil temp was 16 Celsius, and in no time it was 70 Celsius. With TWS it would have taken me a good 20 minutes of driving to get to anywhere close to that. Quote:
I am wondering more than the bearing themselves, whether the oil pump is a contributor to this bearing where. I've noticed with TWS, and when cold, the cold start is extremely rough and lumpy. With M1 it is a lot smoother and the engine revs freely. Experts out there, any thoughts on this?

Got my 2nd oil analysis with 0w40. This time running 4600 miles and 1 track day in colder 60 degree fall weather.
My first analysis was with 0w40 mixed with 2 quarts of Redline 10w60... ran 1 track day on that with 100+ degree summer weather. So far looks good! Lead #s are falling... not that it was originally high anyway. Next analysis will be a mix of Mobil 1 0w40 with Castrol TWS.

[QUOTE=aussiem3;17867196]I saw M1 5w-40 in the stores and it's a semi synthetic oil. I don't know what it will do to the engine given that we've always run fully synthetic oil. 5w is still better than TWS 10w, but what we're trying to counter is the cold start bearing wear.
One thing for sure, the M1 0w-40 warms up a lot faster than TWS. The other night when I started the car the oil temp was 16 Celsius, and in no time it was 70 Celsius. With TWS it would have taken me a good 20 minutes of driving to get to anywhere close to that. Just to clarify I would never suggest anything but a full synthetic. Pennzoil and Motul both have great LL-01 approved 5w40 oils. Also, the 5w40 Pennzoil Euro I use warms up just as fast as the Mobil 0w-40 did. I agree the TWS 10w60 took forever to warm up. |
