Anyone ran a pickup (ford ranger) as a daily?
Considering running a pickup, specifically a ford ranger wildtrak as a daily. Some of the modded versions look pretty awesome, was wondering if anyone had ever run one?
I have a volvo s60 atm which is a nice car, practicality is pretty crap though with no folding seats etc |

In the city, I’ve only seen them create chaos due to their size. I’m sure there are better options for a vehicle if rear folding seats are your priority. |

Big, slow and bouncy I have heard but never driven one. Anything designed to carry a tonne on the rear deck has to have very heavy springs so when unloaded they jump about.

I used to drive a L200 regularly at work. To be honest I hated driving it. Too big, too hard to turn around in the street, hard to park on residential streets.
It was noisy and slow. If you drove it in rear wheel drive the rear end could suddenly swing out when accelerating because it had no weight over the axle. I actually had a RTC in one where I was accelerating on a dual carriageway coming off a roundabout and the rear end came out, I caught it once but it then went the other way, hit the central reservation which bounced me off and across the road and hit another car inside me. Drive it in 4x4 mode and fuel economy was even worse and the turning circle became even worse. I can see the appeal when they are pimped up but I'd never have one. |

The appeal is low benefit in kind if used as a company vehicle or if you are a farmer and that’s about it.

I considered one briefly for biking but unless you live somewhere the risk of being followed home is minimal then you need a top on them and still need to strip the wheels off the bikes. There are some decent deals on new but generally the spec is pretty poor and the interior is all mid-90's spec hard Japanese plastic. I discounted them pretty quickly in favour of the FFRR/D4 idea as used they were similar money but then decided they were too unreliable so ended up in the Beemer. Fuel wise they're no better than the 32mpg the 4.4 RR does and as TouringPleb says they can be very twitchy at the back. And not in a nice and drift able way, more a snap oversteer when you least expect it on the way home in the rain at night in winter kinda way. They can be practical but unless you're literally throwing bikes or lots of outdoor kit/work kit in the back then they really don't work, especially as the load bed in double cabs is pretty short with no way of extending through into the cabin, and with a top on they're not as deep as a traditional big SUV etc.

Two of my neighbours run Ford Rangers.
One for business and tows a flatbed trailer for classic and track cars. The other, a crofter's family, carries kit and tows an Ifor Williams trailer. One has a BMW 5-series, the other an Audi Quattro... says it all really. |
