Some foods and drugs that don't pass FDA certification are also fine to consume. But not everyone wants to test on their own property.

BMW and all other OEMs are required by law to certify other fluid options for oil, coolant, etc. This is to avoid a monopoly that would actually make them more money (i.e. requiring consumers to buy the BMW branded oil they keep in dealerships).

Somehow it got lost in translation and now people say oil companies just pay for a cert. If Castrol says, hey, i'll support your race team if you put our logo on your oil caps, that's far from selling out.

It's an approval process just like everything else. Sure others can work, but there are so many LL-01 certified options that are proven, there's no real requirement to test others. If you wish, feel free and share results for the rest of the community.

You just told XxThe_RemedyXx they don't need to run 5w40 because it's uber thick, and then you are going to switch to the same thickness oil (running temperature)?

Rotella T6 is well known in the Audi/VW community. It has many good properties (additive pack, etc.) and I used it as well in my old Audi B5 S4 (twin turbo 2.7L V6) as it was readily available at almost any store and very reasonably priced for a synthetic oil.

If you search BITOG you will see lots of older threads on Rotella T6 for the various 1.8T and 2.7T VAG engines .

Rotella T6 5w40 is diesel oil and is thicker at 100C than Amsoil 0w40 is.

Rotella is also not approved as bmw oil.

14.3CST viscosity @100C for Rotella T6 5W40

13.3CST viscosity @100C for Amsoil Euro 0W40

Then you have different additives between both.

Just because certain oils say a certain weight, doesn't mean they're all the same, some isn't as thick at certain temperatures and some has different additives for wear.

With modern engines, I would use approved oils only, Rotella doesn't have any approvals for BMW.

Either way, my old N55 had 187k miles on it and all I used was Motul 5w40 it's entire life without issue, a friend of mine is still driving it to this day. Plenty of winters and track days with that car.

The high zinc content Rotella recs of yesteryear don't really apply to the Bx8 engine series.

It was a common forum recommendation ~15yrs ago, but I wouldn't bother with it.

I run BMW 0w30 https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...il-07510017866

I wouldn't run 40 weight, but that's just me. Pretty sure 0w20 is just in the US for fuel economy reasons, but should be fine too. 0w30 was listed in the manual and seemed like a good balance. Just keep up on the intervals to be safe. I used to do 5k w my stock stage 2+ OTS before I switched to a hybrid turbo and the oil analysis always came back good saying I could go further. Now I do every 3k just for piece of mind since FCP has their lifetime replacement program.

Kern417 did a video about this topic as well:

Not just you! My view and situation exactly. I wouldn't use W40 on this engine and 0W20 is clearly focused on fuel economy.

I just had my third oil change with the BMW Twin Turbo 0W30 oil yesterday. I see no reason to move away from it. I have occasional winter trips to the mountains, with cold starts by -10 or -15 C, otherwise would probably consider 5W30.

There was just recently an IG video by one of the most famous BMW tuners here in Germany and he said that most of the broken engines (S55 and B58) they receive, did use thin oil like 0W20. According to him, these oils only get used by BMW due to emission regulatorities. For a tuned car, he would always recommend a thicker oil like a 5W40.

Great. And there is the interview with Liqui Moly, where the guy categorically advises to stick to approved for the specific engine oils, even when tuned, UNLESS the engine is internally modified (e.g. altered tolerances). Which makes sense to me.
And also let's keep in mind that tuned doesn't mean much in isolation. Tuned is not a synonym of daily track-raced.
Besides that I have never heard of a B58 on 0W20 in Germany, so something doesn't add up there.
