Love the color of that E34! I think the E39 would be the keeper for me, although the E28 would be an absolutely blast to drive!

I was done with CarWow drag races, but I did watch this one. Pretty cool to see the evolution (and not always for the better IMO, but unavoidable). I'm partial to the E39 as I have driven them since 1999 and the M5 since 2004, but the E34 and E28 M5s also have huge appeal for me.

Pretty recently I ran into an E28 M88/3. It was a special moment.

Exactly! The drag races have run their course, but I had to watch the battle of the M5s. The out come was predictable of course. I own F90 and would not trade it for squat.

One thing is still for sure, the E60 M5 still easily wins the best sounding exhaust award by a large margin...

I’d love to be in the position (ie. have the room) to pickup an E60 M5 someday. Arguably one of the most special engines dropped into a road car outside of crazy supercar stuff.

I dunno, I have both old and new M’s and the new one is pretty darn fun. Don’t really find myself itching to drive the S54 more than a couple times a year. Apples and oranges tbh, very different and you can certainly love both

The F10 there is the limited 30 jahre version quickly mentioned by Watson with matt paint and heavier 601M cast alloy wheels.

The F10 was quite possibly the worst BMW I have owned.

Heavy, detached, and completely unpredictable in handling. The only positive was the awesome B&O stereo with the beautiful pop up sub woofer.

The E39 is still the best looking M5. The people who designed it should be lauded and enshrined on Mount Rushmore.

And none of that takes away from the modern cars (I own and enjoy them as well), it’s just that are not even close to being the same.
I get it's not the same... I drove a G80 M3x and it nearly put me to sleep and wasn't really involving... but an M5 isn't meant to be an M3 and the modern G80 M3 dimensions w a 6 speed tranny make it awfully close to an older M5... as an upside you get a FAR faster, higher quality built car that's actually even lighter than an E39 M5... it won't feel the same but it will be a far better car.

Again, this is different than comparing say a G80 M3 to an E46 M3... where one is FAR lighter than the other and is meant to be the "driver involvement" car... I could see that argument far more.

Agree re E39. After watching them together, I also think F90 will be similarly lauded as time goes by.

Ditto for my E39 540i M Sport 6 speed, best driving car I’ve ever owned. Besides selling my ‘73 2002tii in College to an asshole, 2nd dumbest thing I’ve ever done.

It's only a higher quality built car if it still lives on 20-30 years later like the ones in the video.

...

I do miss my E34 540/6 from time to time. Had the longest gearing I've ever experienced in a car, but was still so fun to drive. It was nowhere near as sharp as my old E30 but then I wasn't expecting it to be.

Yeah the ZF8 is amazing, and outshines the DCT. Unless you’re from the manual only dinosaur crowd.

The sub woofer does not pop up LOL. They’re both under the seats.

LMAO... not even close, that is unless you are referring to comfort which we can agree on...

There is zero reward in driving a Zf8 using paddles unlike a DCT.

I don't know how many E28s or E34s you see around... but the absolute near non existent number of the ones i've seen were all entirely clapped out with their interior parts barely hanging on... to answer your question... no, because I don't think cars like this will be serviced in 30 years from now.
