I do wonder what happens to the F10 M5, e.g. was it a stock drive shaft that broke, or was it an aftermarket part?

No wonder F90 was the quickest of them all. Old ones are cool but Not particularly quick anymore. E60 was close in terms of speed to F10. F10 gen was huge disappointment for me in terms of looks and driving dynamics. . I stil like E60 to this day and it’s drivetrain is extraordinary no question about that. That V10 sounds glorious and that 8200rpm redline… manual car with proper driver would be faster. F90 is just stupid fast to this day. I don’t know why someone here said he’s surprised it wouldn’t brake. Just don’t mention rod bearings. SMG tranny sucks though. Cool comparison !

Current ///M5 is still a stunner in the looks department. Hopefully BMW won't trash it with the new model like they've done with nearly all the rest of the lineup.

All beautiful cars but that E60 is what got me excited about BMW! The M5 has always been my dream car yet I still haven’t bought one. Each time I’ve always chosen another model, not really sure why but it’s not because I didn’t like the M5. The closest model I’ve owned was the X5M unless you count the M550i. Love the M5.

E39's the coolest.

No other M5 had Clive Owen, Madonna and Guy Ritchie involved.

I do not care about anything else, this is a fact, good day.

Pleasantly surprised how well the e60 held up to the f90 in the rolling race prior to shifting. Put a DcT in the e60, maybe...

Bingo. They've done quite a few videos featuring different trimmed M5s vs _____ as well. Very entertaining.

There is zero reward in driving a Zf8 using paddles unlike a DCT.
Everything else the ZF8 does is better or as good as a dct. The DCT feels better shifting under load and that’s it. The ZF8 is fast, not shit at low speeds, better kick down, and the drawbacks do not outweigh the benefits especially over the DCT.

The dct has better shifting under load which for a performance car is absolute priority... this has been the chief complaint of the zf8 that few folks on the g80 forum have now pointed out whilst driving hard. Also the zf8 does not have as fast of a shift speed as gears in a dct are pre selected... so again - comfort and full auto driving, the zf8 is better - if thats what your looking for in a supposed performance car.

No not at all. The ZF8 performs just as well in every aspect . The shift speed being marginally slower is also barely a drawback. You sound like you read a Wikipedia page and have driven neither.

Exactly. While I love them all (aside from an SMG E60), when one considers how each one stood relative to the competition at the time they were released, the E28's balls hang the lowest. It also felt more German than the rest. Maybe I'm just getting old.

The new cars are involving but you have to be going about twice the speeds to enjoy them.

Indeed, I have read a wikipedia page... luckily i've owned both as well and driven both on a track and the street.

If that were the case then you would know that the ZF8 is just as good and is better overall.

again, the opinion around this are endless...

however the facts remain the same and that is that both have advantages and disadvantages... however from a pure performance as well as feeling perspective, DCT wins always... this is why Porsche and every other exotic performance car manufacturer has retained DCT over Zf8..

The Zf8 BOTH on track and on the street to me seemed to hesitate when shifting under load and when downshifting... it was not fun. The DCT in comparo was banging gears to no end... again, i'll give it you... the Zf8 was more comfortable. The decision was easy for BMW for cost purposes and to integrate an auto in a daily driven car for comfort... it is what it is.

The ZF8 is slightly slower( still faster than a blink), other than feel the ZF8 is better. It’s no contest. Excellent performance and a huge long term bonus is hybrid integration.

I've driven the SMG V10(E63) ,DCT (M4, M3) and 8 speed (high power 435i coupe and M5 comp, Z4 M40i) on track. I felt the DCT was definitely more disruptive than the 8 speed especially when shifting in a corner, the rear would step out and feel unconnected. The SMG car needs a great Trans additive (and because of the internet, won't get into that right now, since I'm affiliated) but can be great when driven right. The S85 sounds glorious but lacks torque, but man do they sing and go in triple digit speeds. Also preferred the mechanical diff in the M6. Z4 M40i's softer rear end made it "squat" in corner exits that I didn't like, but no cause of the Trans. Still, one of the most rewarding cars I've driven/owned (and M cars) was a 6 speed Euro spec E46 M3.
