I don't think BMotorW will screw their engine rep to get the extra mpg or so thin oil gives. Rather, now they build for thin oil, as does everyone.
They could make a decent hybrid if they needed the energy credits.

Reviving my old thread here, but I did some more reading into 5W30 and 5W40, I know, the topic has been beat to death for generations, but it's one of those topics I like to hear people's opinion on.

So from my understanding, the general points are:

5W30:
-Better gas mileage
-Less engine protection than 5W40
-Ambient temperature operating range -35°C to 30°C

5W40:
-Worse gas mileage
-More engine protection than 5W30
-Ambient temperature operating range -30°C to 35°C

The reason why 5W40 has more engine protection is because of its thicker oil, this further prevents carbon and sludge buildup, which has always been an issue for turbo direct injection BMW engines, but 5W40's thicker oil takes more force move, hence the lower gas mileage compare to 5W30. Either one is approved by BMW in the manuals, but because I plan to keep my car long term, engine health was priority for me, and since where I live in Vancouver BC, it has never reached below -10°C, but there have been summer days at 33°C, so I always thought 5W40 had a more suitable operating range too on top of the extra protection.

I'm really curious on hearing you guy's opinion on this.

I plan to buy a 5-quart jug of LL-01 oil and 1 extra quart. If the car needs .3 quart on top of the 5 quarts during the change, it'll be there, and the extra quart will last me through 3 changes.
