I have to add about ~0.8 quarts every 4000 miles. And like you, this car is a weekend car only. The only time I've had to add more than that was when I took it to the track and it literally was at 6-8k RPM for the entire day.

so I am going back to 10w-60 in this weekend because oil consumption is killing me and I do not like the sound when I pushing it hard at hi rpm
then I get very strange sound that makes me worry not like used to be.

I used to add a quart every 2500 mls with 10w-60 but I had to add a quart around 500-700 mls with 0w40.

I'm running the Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40 European oil. It's the Ferrari spec oil fill. Comes up to temperature much faster than 10w60 and also never runs hotter. My oil consumption with the 10w60 was never bad but with the PU 5w40 it's even better.

Interesting tidbit on the elevated iron levels seen in M1 UOAs...if you search the BITIG site, there are dozens of threads talking about elevated iron levels when running M1 across various viscosities and engines. Consensus seems to be it is just an anomaly and no additional wear is actually occurring.

Elevated iron levels with M1, also higher oil consumpsion what is normal with a thinner oil .
Felt the difference between my fingers when comparing the two,the Edge is more sticky even on the skin of my fingers .

Oil consumption in some cases has actually decreased following the switch (for example, my car). For clarity, I have no reason to say Mobil 1 0w40 is better or worse, I'm just becoming somewhat frustrated at assumptions and "guesses" by members here becoming repeated as fact. The fear mongering is worse than some popular news channels Facts: Unknown relevance of (at this point) insignificant iron level increases. More follow-up reports are needed before conclusions can be drawn. Secondly, oil consumption is not necessarily related to oil weight. Often there is an increase in consumption after switching oil weights, but this settles after the second change. |

If the s65 had a quality connecting rod in it it could be run tighter but not with the rod that is supplied.

My comments were only designed to address people stating in an unequivocal manner that Mobil 1 0w40 causes increased oil consumption or is the reason for worrisome iron level increases. My decisions on oil use are based on discussions with individuals experienced in engine design, maintenance, repair and have in-depth knowledge on the S65 engine specifically. Based on their opinions, I've made the switch to 0w40. This has been made with full understanding that there are "unknowns" moving from the BMW spec oil. |

Your car your $...don't be surprised though that not everyone is convinced that moving away from the OEM recommended oil to a thinner oil with a weaker film strength is such a brilliant idea. I haven't checked but I would suspect that a lot of those people who have posted about higher M1 oil consumption just happen to live in a warmer climate.

I think feeling slower is pretty normal. The car revs faster and easier with 0w40. Also better gas mileage.

Running 0w-40 M1 with some lubro-moly MoS2. Noticeably smoother sounding during hard operation and idling. Seems to rev more readily too, but that could just be placebo.

With M1 we saw also failures , so who knows if it's better ? If BMW was able to design the perfect bearing for our S65 I think the last builts of 2013 were ok , but sadly we saw also failures of end 2013 ! They knew it...they saw it often ! So personal I think there was no solution...and still not ,2-3 years of development and testing and 7 years in production makes a total of about "10 years" !?!? That's why i'm thinking it's a mounting problem from out of the factory ,the more because I saw on here a built of 2008 with 154,158 Miles on it ,that's 248.086 km ! And this S65 has exactly the same bearings as ours from out of the factory and was running with 10W60 , so where is the difference ? Better would be if this thread not existed ...what would say that we had good bearings ! But thanks to BMW this thread exists !

Some cars can survive a long time but others give out at low mileage. BMW knew about these problems with their older engines and never fixed the issues on the S65.
