How many miles do dealers typically put on new car?

So my new x7 m50i came in last week, and I went and paid for it and took it around the block. It had 4 miles on it. I left it there this week so they could put tint on my windows and powder coat the wheels (no black wheels for an x7?!). When I signed the paperwork last week, they had put 11 miles on it. Today, checking the myBMW page, it has over 20 miles on it. Is this normal? Are they letting other customers test drive my vehicle?

Any help is appreicated

Given how important break-in periods are, I'd be pretty pissed.

Maybe they had to drive it to get the wheels powder coated.

Who knows how it was driven for those 16 miles. I hope it doesn't show up in a YouTube review with several 0-60 and 1/4 miles runs on it.

I hope it's not the workers taking it for a joyride around.

I'd ask them why the fuck does my car needs to do 16 miles to get tints and powder coated wheels.

EDIT: Oh reading other comments I realise dealer might not do that in house. Would make sense in this case. Another reason to avoid dealers lmao

Most dealers don’t tint or powder coat wheels themselves. I wouldn’t be surprise if that is the mileage to and from two shops for the tint and powder coat.

Typically a car marked as sold cannot be test driven.

The miles were most likely obtained from going to and from tint and powder coat. I would ask.

What you get for not sourcing the tint and powder coat yourself.

I have trust issues, would never have them keep the car longer than needed, more risk of some dope taking it for a joyride. It's already bad enough going in for service.

Just ask the dealer where the work was done: shop name, how many miles from the dealer. Almost every dealer works closely with local wheel repair, detail shops or collision repair facilities.

This.

Having worked at dealerships etc. I have NEVER seen one that did tinting or powder coating in house.

Hell BMW of Nashua NH does not even have detailing. They sub it out to a local company who drives the car over to their shop to do the detail and then back. Which pisses me the fuck off as I don't trust some idiot with my ST 6466 335i.

Just call and ask them about it. I am sure there is a logical reason for it.

When I worked at dealers they would give us new cars to drive. Only thing was don't put more than 500 miles on the car. They would then give us a new car to drive with zero miles. As long as you did this once a month they were fine with it. Granted, the cars were not sold. Driving a sold car is stupid and a liability if they can avoid it.

Depends upon your location. I grew up in Connecticut and we thought one mile was a trip. Now, in spread out greater Phoenix, 4 or 5 miles is my neighborhood.

So depending upon whether your dealership is in the middle of downtown Miami or in an exurban area, the miles to the specialized shops will vary greatly.

Are you in South FL? If so I'd say it's pretty typical for the vendor to be located a 10-12 mile round trip from new car dealers. I doubt very much they'll do anything to the car unless they crash it or something (in which case you'll know for sure it's harmed)

If it is Braman in Miami or BMW of Ft. Lauderdale they have vendors really close by.

Until something happens to your new 120K vehicle and they say that they are not responsible for damages. We have all seen it too many times.

It can cause damage if in those 10 miles were hard driven miles from a ignorant tech that wanted to test how fast the car is while in the break in period.......

Perfectly normal. TBH, I don't think I've ever seen a car leave my dealer with 4 miles on it. Usually they're in the 12-20 range.

If you have had work done, I'd expect more.

If this is your ordered car, no shot they're letting other customers drive it.

I wouldn't worry too much. The car has a full warranty. Unless it was downshifted and went over the redline there is no need to worry.

My 2017 NSX had 21mi on the odo when I got it, and some of those miles were put on the car being tested at the track at Honda by a factory driver. And I know it was probably pushed pretty hard.

Although you read in the social media about some technician that took a Corvette 150 miles an hour, it really doesn’t exist in real life. Liability insurance at a dealership is ungodly expensive now, and if an insurer finds out a technician was abusing a car, they can void their insurance almost immediately. Therefore every tech knows that if something like this comes up they will be immediately gone.

Why would you pay dealer mark up for tint and powder coating that is outsourced?

The only reason would be to roll it into the loan...or if it is a hassle to do yourself for some reason? I had a dealer tint a car's windows once just because it was a convenience.
