Best year for B58?

I'm looking to pick up a 340i but would also consider a M240i or 440i.

Is there a year to stay away from? EX: Is the 2017 + 340i better then the 2016?

I purchased a 2016 model brand new and have clocked 95,000 miles on it. Not heavily modded, but I do have Dinan springs/sways, bootmod3 stage 1, and xHP.

One rear diff seal formed a small leak, so I replaced both seals. Other than that, nothing unexpected has cropped up.

There are different generations of the B58. I would not worry Gen 1 vs a Gen 2 B58

If you are considering tuning then there is a cutoff point around june 2020 where BMW locked the DME. I don't have the exact details on my mind but if tuning is a thing look into this.

If you are considering 2016 vs 2017 is may be wise to look at the builtin cellular device and make sure it uses 4G instead of 3G. 3G cellular support is most likely terminated so in that case your car falls back to 2G which severely limits the online options of the car.

Also, 2016 did come with the ID4 interface and a lower spec NBT EVO HU.

If you want ID5/6 (which gives you CarPlay) and do not want to swap your HU, then look for a 2017+ model.

There was a pretty important revision to the vanos system in August of 2017. The cams, sprockets, and valves were all changed due to issues in the early version. The injector part was also changed right around then. The early 2016 models or more prone to the injector failures, as mine was. The oil pressure sensor was reduced from M12 to M10, right around then as well. I don't know why I imagine due to the Vanos changes. The TU and Gen 2 changes are pretty well documented. But there are a few sneaky changes throughout just gen 1. If there are any more I will probably find them soon.

All good info.

I think my take away is to try to grab a 2018-2019, but not count out the earlier models.

Thanks everyone

To be fair, if you purchase a Gen 2 B58. It would only need a downpipe, and a tune for FBO E50. On Gen 2 you receive the upgraded TU pump. I have fitted the TU pump to my Gen 1 B58. However just a small thought. Only $400 USD for the TU pump.

But I would worry about body style / packages and color combinations on your B58.

I’m looking into purchasing my first bmw, I am currently looking at a 2020 440i and I am planning on modding it, but I don’t see anywhere about piggy back tunes such bm3 or mhd on it, is it possible for me to tune it or no?

How is any of this related to the B58 engine which both the subforum and the thread are all about!?

the year of the b58 engine and the car must match obviously, and these are differences in the car (not engine, clearly) so yeah not b58 related but still relavent info if trying to give someone for their overall best year question.

but i for one feel more for the lci vs pre lci and color & package in decision making here. maybe price and mileage first honestly

you seem like my wife in telling me the scissors don't go in the tool drawer they go in the mail supplies drawer

No it is fine. We can also talk about the best year for Brunello wine to go in the trunk of the car… since it is also related, but actually the question was specifically about B58… and so is this part of the forum.

Excuse my sarcasm just wanted to keep the thread tidy, before people start talking about the difference in suspension and Harman Kardon between the model years….

Just learn to ignore Skyhigh. OP asked about the car, not specifically the engine anyway.

Haha, yeah i get it. But i seriously don't understand why my wife keeps moving the damn scissors.

For actual b58 discussion i realized my japan bmw (jdm bmw) has a few differences in packages but i am not skilled enough to find out if anything b58 wise is different...

BM3 and MHD are not piggyback systems. They are full flash software systems which would require a Femto unlock (you ship your ECU to them, they unlock it, and send it back to you) depending on the month of that 2020. 4coupe440i mentions this above...

The JB4 is a piggyback option. I personally use BM3 and wouldn't choose anything else for the mere fact that I can create my own tunes, but that's not for everyone. You basically have two camps on the flash side of things, BM3, and MHD. MHD seems just as capable, it was just a personal choice for me not to use it.

As for JB4, I don't really see anyone talk about it too much (I still don't know why this board doesn't have a dedicated Engine Management forum, but I digress). The JB4 however is a piece of hardware, would not require the Femto unlock to use since it's microcontroller basically just interrupts the voltages from the engine's sensors, scales them, and spits them back out so the DME gets "tricked" into thinking engine conditions are one way when they are another. It doesn't make an actualy changes to the DME. Plus it can be removed when selling the car without any software licensing issues.
