So I was curious
you know when people say "I'm making 5 Alarm Chili" or "3 Alarm Chili"

what the hell do they mean by Alarm?
how do they count how many Alarms it has...

I've been curious about this for a while...

thanks

It's like on the news when they talk about a "three alarm fire". That means that 3 different fire stations get called in to fight a single fire.

More alarms just means hotter chili.

The "5 alarm" for one persons chili, might be lower for someone else. It's generally subjective. If you want to know how "heat" is measured in peppers and hot sauces in general, it's measured on the Scoville Scale.

Otherwise I don't know what you mean by "read the thread" because I was the first to attempt an answer.

I'm not sure it's subjective

in the simpsons episode where they go to a chili cook-off

Ned Flanders claims a 5 Alarm Chili.

Homer: one alarm... 2.... 3.... hey! what's the big idea??
Ned: oooh.. I'm a sham.. it's only 3.. 4 at best...
Todd: Daddy, are you gonna go to prison?
Ned: we'll see son... we'll see...

or something along that lines...
so I was curious. and I bought the Home Improvement Final Season and one of the Tool Times, Heidi spices it up from a 4 alarm to an 8 alarm.. and I saw both episodes within the same day.. so I was like "Alarm? wtf?"

thus the origin of the question

but hey, that scoville scale is cool

Completely subjective, but I think generally, it's on a scale of 1-5, 5 being hottest.

I think it's subjective in terms of "do i actually find 5 alarm spicy or not"

but there has to be an actual way of measuring 5 alarm

like 5 alarm is 5 alarm.. it's not 5 alarm for one dude, and 2 for the next.. it's 5 alarm.. u just don't find it spicy is all

Home Improvement is the shit. I love that show. I only have seasons 1-4 I think.

For me, chilli.....the hotter, the better.
