I bought some Laphroaig and can't drink it. Too smokey/peaty. Love me some Dalmore and Balvenie, though.

I remember thinking that too, and now I'm dating a girl who was born in the early 90s.

On the youth side, the only Scotch I've had was JW and Macallan, so I can't necessarily be a connoisseur on that side when I'm barely starting to refine my tastes in beer.

On the old side, I can spell connoisseur without triggering spell check, and I've evolved to the point where I can't stand light beers and can drink Guinness without wincing... Or with Jameson's and Bailey's .

But other things...

* You can easily say big words without being mocked (too much), like connoisseur, extenuate, surreptitious, confabulation, insidious and et cetera... Smoothly without feeling like you're taking the frickin' SATs.

* When a song you heard in middle school featuring a 4 year-old collaborating with her dad about killing her mom and throwing her off a lake is now 18.

* When you talk about stuff that happened back then, you realize that it happened literally at half your current age, or when 2008 didn't feel like that long ago.

* When at one point, the mainstream new songs you looked forward to listening to is now on SXM Backspin (old school for you non-satellite-radio people), and now you know what people who are older than you are talking about when they say that music changed and can't stand any of the newer so-called music stations... Not to mention all the songs you used to like gets so overplayed you can't stand it anymore... If I hear Sandstorm one more time I'm going to lose my shit.

* Speaking of which, it's when you hear a new song and you know where it was sampled from, like "fuck, Minaj fucked up Baby Got Back!"

* When you used to be able to stay up until the break of dawn at clubs and not really feel that tired, to getting sick of clubs and not even being able to hang past midnight at a house party and can fall asleep despite insanely loud music.

* Just when you thought you knew all the slang, a new one would come along and throw you off completely and can't even be guessed... Like "rachet".

* When you're not 30 yet and have a good amount of grays and you can't go an hour without cracking your back or neck.

* When you care less and less about bodily noises, or going from rather holding it in your gas all day to as long as it's not within earshot of anybody.

* Simply put, when everything you encounter is annoying you or you're jaded, and you can't stand people's shit anymore.

...And I'm just 28. I imagine myself being a fucking bag of joy even 10 years later.

Pick up a bottle of The Balvenie Caribbean Cask. Got a nice sweet side to it.

Got sick of clubs in my late 20's, too. Never could stand crowds and hated having my clothes smell like stale smoke.

Time started flying by for me in my 30's. I spent my late teens and most of my 20's in the army and got out shortly before my 30's, and then started going from one crappy job to the next. I wasted 10 years farting around getting my degree, and then finally gained some focus again. 40's were better. I gained some experience that got me where I am today. I don't do anything special and don't rake in huge bucks, but we live well and life is good and we're pretty much set for retirement in 12-15 years, so all is good.

I was driving for UPS in Nürnberg, Germany shortly before the Wall opened. There were already Trabis everywhere and folks from the east were streaming through Czechoslovakia in Austria and then on to Germany. I came back to the US on a Sunday in November '89 and the Wall was opened on that Tuesday. I was so pissed that I missed that huge party. If I had been in Germany still, I would have gone to Berlin to see it firsthand.

This was '84. Can still vividly recall going through Check Point Charlie and getting searched upon entering East Berlin....

Now I work with a bunch of kids that weren't even alive then

I saw the DiCaprio version of Romeo and Juliet in 8th or 9th grade. The one with guns! It blew my mind.
