Testament to BMW safety: 135 headfirst into telephone pole, driver unhurt

Feinted driving to work this morning, and went headfirst into a telephone pole at ~35-40mph. I am completely uninjured. Car is definitely totalled, engine guts spilled on the road.

Sucks that the 1er died, but impressed with the crash performance.

Wow glad to hear you're unscathed, but you didn't happen to get any pics? 35mph headlong into a telephone pole must have mangled the car. Was your foot still on the gas or did you coast into it?

Do they have any idea of why you fainted? That's the real worry - hope you're truly well and sorry to hear about the wreck.

Whoa man, you're alive! What's your replacement for your 1? Hopefully it's just as safe.

Feinted? Wow, you were having a sword fight from inside the car?! I'm impressed you came out so well.

Hope you're okay besides the accident; the cause of the fainting spell. I can feel faint due to low blood pressure sometimes. You should be at the doc's and not on the internet

Yes, thankfully, most all modern cars are very safe compared to the 'old days.' At least you weren't in a 1982 Kia or something.

I got iPhone pics I'll upload.

As for the fainting (hah at the sword fight comment), I'm coming off a med that I think caused it, but going to the doc to get it checked.

Thankfully I was off the gas when I hit, the woman behind me said I slowed from 40 to 35 or so.

It would have been messy in a '95 accord, forget an '82 KIA. As it was, the police were amazed I was unscathed.

Good to hear you're ok. Have them check out your head completely. Cat scans, MRI, the whole 9. You can never take feeling better now for granted. Will you be getting another 1er or something else?

wow. Glad you are alive. Did the airbags pop out. I heard from other's people experience that the airbag does more damage than the crash itself. Please post some pics so i can see how the airbags look like all around the bmw. Thanks

That's terrible. Assuming you get a clean bill of health - what are you going to do about a car?

Waiting to hear from insurance, but I'm positive it's totalled.

All the airbags deployed, I'll get up the pic I took. They work well, everything is completely covered (windows, hard points), and the drivers airbag didn't hurt at all. I didn't even get bruised on my chest.

I'll have to see what insurance says, but I'll likely part out what survived. It's at the BMW bodyshop, I'll see if I can talk them into pulling the interior out (assuming a total).

As for replacing the car, I'm undecided. I may pick up a Z4MC or another S2K along with something comfortable, safe, and preferably AWD, or I may look at an E92 M3 now that there are such good deals, look at that new S4, or maybe pick up another 135i. I'll really have to see what insurance offers me for the car.

I also want to finish getting all these tests done to make sure nothing is wrong (EEG, CT, echo, etc)

So far had MRI, 24hr Holter, EKG, full blood incl hormone panel, doing EEG Thursday and echo next week. I'm not taking this lightly.

Insurance says total, they won't let me take any parts off the car, sorry to people who wanted things.
