I'd say whatever engine came in the ether E36 is a strong contender!

The E36 motors seem to just keep going and going and going. The 1993 318i I gave to a family member just crossed 300K miles and is still going just fine. I doubt that the N54 or N55 that I have in either of my current BMWs will last that long.

"Better" depends on what's important to one at the time. When my car is new, "better" means it pulls really strong whenever I need it to, and I don't have to coddle it with kid gloves to keep it that way. After the manufacturer's new car warranty expires, "better" means I don't have to keep fixing things with motor and that when I do have to fix something, it's 4+ years before I have to fix something else.

For other folks, "better" may mean it's easier to modify so it goes faster. Or it could just mean that it's outright faster (when new). Others may instead feel that "better" means inexpensive and easy to fix.

All the best.

The N54 is a really great engine with tons of potential, but being a former E46 M3 owner, I have to place my vote for the S54.

M20B25 gets my vote. Rev-happy and damn near bullet-proof. I had so much fun with it. That and it's easy to work on, except for the valve adjustment, which is kind of a pain, and needs to be done every 15k miles.

I love the S85, but the N52 is silky smooth.

M30. There's a reason the M30 design and it's variants were used for 28 years.

I had an M30. That was an awesome engine! 800K on the M50!? I'd love to look at my odometer and see 800k!

IMO engines and cars in general are lasting less and less nowadays.

The only other Bimmer I've had had a M30B34, and I thought that was a good engine... until it threw a rod at "only" 205K miles But it was fun while it lasted...

To be fair, less than 10K of those miles were mine... I bought the car old 'n' beat.

e28 M5. What engines should look like. A beautiful performance engine ahead of its time.

I think the N52 is going to become legendary. That's why I bought another. My e90's N52 is just as smooth as it was when I bought it.

It's the last of the best line of engines BMW has made. The last NA engine. Sigh.
