Compulsory tipping pisses me off

The whole concept of it is stupid.

You shouldn't be expected to GIVE someone money for a service, even if it's bad.

i'm guilty of that. No matter how bad the service was I give a minimum of $2.

I was not brought in a society that tips, but realize that Americans do. That being said, some of you take it too far. Picking up a pizza and tipping? Stupid. Tipping 30%? Stupid. Tipping 20% when the service is mediocre? Stupid. If you have a bad attitude or are not making an effort, enjoy your 10% tip asshole.

One time I drove by a drive thru McDonald's in China and tipped the guy. We both had a good laugh.

Unfortunately our food service industry is built around it. If you make tips your hourly wage is only $2.13 so you effectively live off the tips and if someone stiffs you on it then you're gonna have to struggle. So on one hand I try to tip at least 10% even if the service is terrible but on the other, that should motivate you to provide good service. In theory anyway.

In a lot of places tipping is outright rude because it's like saying I don't think you make enough to get by on and you need the charity.

I generally try to tip close to 20% if the service is average to great. However, if it's terrible, I'll just tip however many cents it is to get up to the next whole dollar.

20% is my general rule of thumb. If you really suck dick, I tip accordingly. I'm paying for a service, if service sucks, then get a new job where you don't have to deal with people.

Most people pay extra for that.

So now we are paying people out of charity?
They can't, and don't get paid below minimum wage, if they don't make enough in tips the employer covers the cost.

Personally, I tip according to service provided, and find the 15% "standard" as just a sort of rough ballpark estimate on how much to tip on any given meal with expected service, that doesn't negatively or [overly] positively affect your experience.

One time, I tipped 50% on a dinner with then-gf (who farted on my sexy BMW leather seat and I immediately dumped her ass) to a guy who was just downright awesome, and made the dinner one of the best I've ever had. Excellent food + amazing service = huge tip. And that meal was expensive as hell too.

Never had poor service, but were I to, there's no way in hell I'm tipping 15%. And I mean poor as in waiter/waitress single-handedly, negatively affects the meal for me. Yeah I'll still tip simply out of the kindness of my heart, but don't expect more than 5% on complete shit service.

I recently learned to separate real services from someone just bringing you food. A friend of mine brought up a good point and I agree with him. I used to always tip 15-20%. That has changed, and here is why.

Let's say you go to eat crawfish. You order your food, a waiter or waitress brings out the food. Every now and then they come around and refill your water. Nowadays I don't consider that real servicing. I mean it is almost like going to McDonald's and have someone bring you the food. Is that really servicing? Not really. It's just like a buffet where they bring you your drinks and refill them. Sure, they bring you stuff but it's not really a service. I now do 10% for that just because I feel like I have to tip and I feel like 10% is enough.

Now on the other hand, if I were going to a fancy restaurant and they give me real service (bringing bread, butter, refilling my drinks, go over the specials, cleaning up my plates as I'm done with them, cleaning up the bread crumbs every time they bring out a new dish, etc.), I have no probably tipping them 18-20%. Now that depends too. Say if's a $500 dinner, I would tip something like $60-80 (10% would be $100). Why? Because IMO $60-80 is pretty damn good already. I mean most dinners are an hour to maybe 90 mins. So unless you're making a boatload of money, I don't think it is necessary to tip $50 an hour. If the dinner is $200, I would tip $30-40 (supposed to be before tax).

My 2 cents.

Oh I've missed that rant! I love that movie!

And to tipping: my friend had a birthday we went out. I as usual didnt shop for presents, so I picked up the bill for dinner.

20% for an extra large party. I had to be the mean bitch, and get the manager involved when the third bill came in my way and still nothing was right in it! I had had six drinks which most certainly did not receive or drink, since I was the DD. Anyway, third bill was close enough and the bloody samba music was such a torture I just gave in and handed them my credit card. The waitress ran after me, since I left no tip, and I told her politely, that if you charge 20% extra for a large party, and then we never get even water refills, I have to shave off 45% off the bill by complaining and finally going through the manager, no tip is deserved.

I am a good tipper, but if its a half ass job, I will forget ever seeing that line.

I tip 20 cents.

But seriously...20% unless the service is terrible, which does not happen too often.

Next few years it will be 25% - just pay them a proper wage and ask we tip for exceptional service. It's not a commission.

Tipping at a restaurant doesn't bother me, but having to feel obligated to tip some cashier or other various service where they make a standard wage, does. I hate it when I'm at a deli or something and they look at me weird because I don't leave a tip.

I tip about 20% average if they do everything we ask (not even high demands), get orders right, are courteous and expedient. If they are rude and slow, fuck them.

What really? 20%

There is a 8.5% tax fee in California but I still tip the total bill not the subtotal.

On higher end restaurants I tip 18% of total bill. I didnt know 20% is the new standard now.

Go to Japan. Leave a tip. And the server will give it right back to you. Then you realize it's an American thing.

Or leave no tip and get bashed on Facebook for being a deadbeat. Some restaurants in LA add tips automatically and you have no choice.

And I usually tip 15 to 20%. Left a 45% tip in Dallas, TX because the bartender was blessed.

I still subscribe to the idea that tips should be earned, not expected. If my waiter/waitress totally blows me off, is very rude, and unapologetic about their lackluster service, I won't feel guilty about refusing to tip. But that has only happened on a handful of occasions. Otherwise, I tip 18-20% when dining in.

I tip 18% for "good" service. If they impress me, I will easily give more. If they suck, I will not hesitate to walk right out the door with a dash through the tip line. I have worked jobs where I get paid $5/hour and make good tips because I busted my ass with every customer I was with. It easily came out to $15 an hour. I expect the same type of treatment in return.

The only people I tip besides a waiter, waitress or bartender is the valet or car wash. Valet is a buck or two, no need to spoil them, they have a great job lol. Car wash (what I used to do) I will give good tips if its on a personal basis. If its just a bucket that everyone splits, I will leave minimal tip.
