Post BMW iPhone 5 Snap-In Adapter Cradle Now Available

BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW iPhone 5 Snap-In Adapter Cradle Now Available

COMMENTS

Good news for iPhone 5 owners. The BMW iPhone snap-in adapter for the iPhone 5 is now available, ahead of the original estimated delivery frame of June 2013.

When Apple released the iPhone 5 in September of last year, with it came a change to its connector from the previous 30-pin to the new 8-pin 'Lightning' connector. This change meant that the newest iPhone would not work with BMW's past iPhone snap-in-adapters.

The new adapter fits the following BMW models with Combox: E8x 1 Series, E9x 3 Series, E6x 5 Series, F1x models, X1, F25 X3, E70 X5.

The part number for the new iPhone 5 snap-in adapter is: 84.21-2 338 568-01 and it currently retails for €399 euros in Europe.

Please note that the iPhone 5 media span-in adapter does not support video playback. It is also currently not available for order in the U.S.

Here is a photo of it installed in a E60 5 Series.

The silver tab in the middle says "EDITION" and the silver tab at the base says "MEDIA".

If this does not support video playback, what do you get with the cradle that you don´t already get with 6NR?

I was wondering about that. What exactly will this provide that the cable doesn't already do? Shrugs.

We can get the cradle for roughly $280-300 USD in the states so it's not so bad. I might spring for it and give it a try.

But if it really can't do the video/ipod out, this cradle will be as effective as this DIY

My car is F30h without Combox (have NBT Nav), so I guess this will not work?

Apple Lightning to VGA adapter, which includes an embedded chip that does digital-to-analog video conversion: US $49

BMW cradle which contains no such chip: US ~$300

WTF.

what a ripoff, especially given that it doesn't support video playback.. also, good to see how *quick* BMW was in getting us an adapter that doesn't support the one feature that most folks really care about..

The one thing that I loved about the previous cradle was the Super fast charging. I mean it was really fast! But I took a loss on the other one and only have 18 months left on my lease so I don't think I'll bite.

It will utilize the shark fin on your car as the phone's antenna, which boosts reception significantly.

Time for a RANT

It's funny how BMW wants to copy the (HORRIBLE) genius bar idea from Apple because these two companies really are birds of a feather.

BMW makes it so friggin complicated to connect something as simple as a smartphone to their car. It wasn't until recently that you were able to connect an iPhone to the car without having to use an overpriced proprietary cable.

Much cheaper cars and much cheaper phones are able to connect to each other simply with a mini usb cable.

And this snap in adapter that realistically doesn't do anything more than a 2 dollar cable costs 399 euros?!

The Combox is built-in in your NBT CIC.

Regardless, unless you are looking to use the external cell OEM antenna then there is no extra feature of this cradle over the USB port/Apple cable combo.

Wow, $400 euros? Wasn't the top line "media" version for the iphone 4S $299 retail? and this doesn't support everything that one does?

they are crazy on the pricing, BUT watch the used market on ebay, I picked up my 4S media adapter for $120 shipped, works perfect (guy just upgraded to an iphone 5 and didn't need it). I am thinking I will just hang onto my iphone 4S until the iphone 6 comes out in 2014, oh but that means there won't be a BMW adapter until spring 2015
