bmw passenger seat occupant detection mat
I have a e60 2007 550i and since about a month I have been getting a fasten seatbelt warning light and sound for passenger when there is not a passenger in my car.
I brought it to the BMW dealer and they said I need to have the passenger seat sensor mat replaced and want to charge me $1309 (about $800 parts + labor). factory warranty ran out and my extended warranty (direct buy elite plan) say they don't cover satebelt, airbag and other safety things. I been doing some digging and came across this recall: http://brandilawblog.com/2013/12/26/...g-mat-failure/ I did not receive letter and my dealer says I am not eligible as they say its vin-number specific and nothing popped up their system. But when I read it, it does concern the exact same part that failed and needs to be replaced and my car matches the year and style of recall. Any thoughts or advice? Thanks so much |

There has been recall campains on this particular item, and extended warranty from BMW. You may check if you are covered, I have no idea if e60 were in the recall campaign.
1309$ for this work is pure robbery. The part is cheap and the work is easy. |

Had this same problem on the passenger seat of my old e36... I ended up just bypassing the seat matt sensor. 15 minutes of work and I was good to go.

Call BMW NA and talk to them and tell them you will inform NHTSA also. If they don't authorize repair call NHTSA and complain (also mention recent re-call). Then go on Ebay and get a passenger seat occupancy emulator for your car until Service Bulletin comes out. |

I ended up replacing the entire sensor myself BEFORE they recalled the part. I filed a complaint with the Federal Government and after 6 months BMW issued a recall for the part and they gave me my money back for the part.
FYI- If you have ever worked on upholstery, its really not a tuff job to change the sensor. Took me about 4 hrs total. |
