N54 in the new 7 series
It's been officially stated that the N54 engine used in the new 740i produces 325 hp and 45.9 kgm tq.
Does this mean that the N54 engined used in 335i is capable of producing more power with higher boost? I know it is capable but does it prove that it is safe and reliable? |

These guys are the most consistent and accurate source for true power output I'm aware of. According to them, the N54 produces exactly 282 HP.

If that's the way to do it then that's cool, but could you explain why?
If there's a 20% loss, couldn't you just multiply 282 x .2, which equals 56.4, then add that to the original number of 282 and get 338.4? I think I'm missing something.

However, if the actual HP for a 335 is say 340HP and 20% less at the rear wheels (272 HP), that does not mean the same engine in the 7 series would yield the same results. In theory it should but it really depends on the software programming and the MPG BMW is trying to achieve along with the drive train components and gearing used.

it is so strange to see bmw going back ... from 740i to 745i and now back to 740i ? it seems like this engine is a bit small for such a big car ... i would like to see it with 4.4 TT like on X6 ...

I think the V8/12's are going away. More turbos will be used in 4 and 6 cyl engines.
