Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 1, 2018… Sales of BMW Group vehicles in the U.S. increased 3.4 percent in May 2018 for a total of 30,888 vehicles (BMW and MINI brands combined), compared with 29,881 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date BMW Group sales in the U.S. are up 3.3 percent from the first five months of 2017.

“Once again BMW has defied the odds with seven straight months of sales gains and the outlook for the second half of the year is positive,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “Our X model Sports Activity Vehicles continue their steady increase as availability improves and the BMW 5 Series is proof there’s strong demand for a great sedan, especially the electrified version which is now approaching 20% of 5 Series sales.”

BMW Brand Sales
Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 3.3 percent in May 2018 for a total of 26,662 compared to 25,818 vehicles sold in May 2017. Year-to-date, the BMW brand is up 3.2 percent on sales of 123,979 vehicles compared to 120,124 sold in the first five months of 2017.

BMW’s lineup of Sports Activity Vehicles accounted for 52 percent of BMW brand sales in May 2018, with particularly strong performances from the BMW X3 and BMW X5, as well as the first-ever BMW X2.

MINI Brand Sales
For May, MINI USA reported 4,226 vehicles sold, an increase of 4.0 percent from the 4,063 sold in the same month a year ago. The MINI Countryman continued its strong performance this month, rising 29.4 percent compared to May 2017 and contributing to a 61.9 percent year-to-date increase over Countryman sales in the first five months of 2017.

BMW Group Electrified Vehicle Sales
BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) sales of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles totaled 2,046 in May 2018, an increase of 26.9 percent from the 1,612 sold in the same month a year ago. BMW Group electrified vehicles accounted for 6.6 percent of U.S. sales in May 2018.

BMW Group currently offers seven electrified models in the U.S., including the BMW i3, BMW i8, BMW 330e, BMW 530e, BMW 740e, BMW X5 xDrive 40e and MINI Countryman plug-in-hybrid electric vehicle.

BMW Pre-Owned Vehicles
In May, BMW Certified Pre-Owned sold 12,145 vehicles, an increase of 14.5 percent from May 2017.
Total BMW Pre-Owned sold 23,147 vehicles, making May 2018 the best May in BMW Pre-Owned history.

MINI Pre-Owned Vehicles
MINI Certified Pre-Owned sold 1,381 vehicles in May, an increase of 36.5 percent from May 2017.
Total MINI Pre-Owned sold 3,009 vehicles in May, an increase of 11.8 percent from May 2017.

Pretty impressive. I think in the next year we are going to see the hybrid drivetrains grow even more due to the Model 3 coming into the market. I'm curious to see how they will sit this time next year.

Anyone know why X3 YTD sales would be down? I think that the year-over-year number would be comping the wind-down of the old model to full production of the new model, so I'm surprised that sales would have dropped.

I wonder how much $$ they're losing on CPO sales. It doesn't look good judging by cpo prices and inventory numbers of the local dealers.

I don't think the supply of 2018 X3s has really been that high up until a month or two ago. There should be tons on lots now and should catch up to previous years numbers in a hurry now.

Just now starting to see a few on the roads after picking up Wife's back in January.

Glad my assumptions were correct.

We contributed to 2017 sales numbers with my wife's M40i and my SIL contributed to May 2018 numbers with her M40i.

It seems that 6 Series was sold like crazy. No wonder.

As I said before, BMW should not offer only the 8, if 6 is gone, they will loose a big chunk of cash.
6 Is a wonderful vehicle, not to mention one of the most beautiful ever built.
They should continue to offer the 6; 5 and 6 are the luxury that many are looking for.
Not everyone wants an 8.
8 might look great but if the price is too high, it will make it desirable but not achievable for many. Or, it will be in a niche were other options are hard to be ignored.

6 series number include the new 640GT not just the old 6 Coupe /conv/GC so they are a little deceiving.

Yeah, I guess that you are right. yet, not too many 6 GT on the road so I presume that is the Coupe/GC are the ones that plays the hard roll in here. It will be interesting to see the 6 Series sale by model.

BMW put a sales spiff on the GT. So we were extra motivated to show and sell the GT. BMW wants to move upmarket and play with the S Coupe. I am expecting the next 4 series to move upmarket and capture some of the 6 series market.

There may be supply issues (still) as there have been a shortage or rail from the SC plant. The US is likely not impacted as much as Canada. All X cars to Canada are delayed 2-4 weeks because there are no rail carts to ship the vehicles so what BMW has been doing is shipping them out to sea and re-entering into Halifax. Obviously this wouldn't apply to US shipments but I would assume there would still be some delay as there just aren't any rail carts to ship.

Whatever they do, the 6GT looks awkward... And has four doors, not two.
I rather go for the Audi S5. Looks better, yet less money.
Yet, 4 and S5 are still smaller.
Somehow though, the Audi S5 looks and is bigger and more roomier than 4 or 4 GranCoupe.

They should keep a 6 Coupe.

Lets see what the G22 looks like before passing judgement

That's exactly what I am waiting for as well. Hoping for an M3 with M xDrive.
If not, I want to see the reiteration of the 4 Gran Coupe.
I love the 6, just afraid of the loss in value since is dead.

Some of these numbers will take a nosedive if Trump adds his 25% import tax on the overseas built vehicles. Expect him to do it as he will probably have a paddy once the EU starts taxing Harley's, Levi's etc etc and he has said before he wants to ban the import of German luxury cars.

Global sales.
The eDrive models continue to grow as does the X models.
X2 off to a flying start globally. X3 waiting list up to eight months in some markets.

If you like the ideas with The 8. Then you will like the new 4er. It's more sporty and less visually similar to its accompanying 3er.
Personally I love it with its broad haunches, dramatic roofline and that taller kidney grille that takes up the whole of the facia with slimmer headlights (Laser will be available) giving the impression of something sinister.
Very Shark like - rounded snout, piercing eyes and large mouth with inescapable jaws.
It's new appearance also explains why the hardtop has been abandoned. Not just for weight but also for appearance.

Not has their been a controversial BMW design since the early 2000s.
But bring it. I want to see the chaos it will bring amongst the Bimmerati

Scott26,

How is the BMW 5-Series G30 currently doing sales wise in the US market?

I ask because this market is generally hostile to sedans and big/expensive ones at that.

I know the current 3 series is nearing the end of its life cycle, but it is kind of amazing to see the Tesla Model 3 outselling the BMW by such a healthy margin. BMW really needs to get their next gen electrics out NOW!

Not impressive at all. Without the X2, car sales would have tanked by 1,500 cars year over year. Only “car” bright spot was the 7 Series sales level doubling.
