The BRZ/GT86 is too damn slow. o-60 in 7.x seconds? Fk that, at least in America where we have lots of straight roads.

There must be a reason for so much Miatas sold in the US since its introduction in the american market about 20 years ago (mind you the Miata is slower than the Toyobaru)...

Yeah well there's also a crap ton of Camrys and minivans so not very many people care about speed. Perhaps the BRZ STi will change my mind if the 0-60 time is in the low 5s high 4s.

BRZ 0-60 is more like 6.4 and I think I've seen a 6.1 from one of the magazines. Not exactly stunning, but not the same thing as 7.0 seconds either. Miatas have been in the 6's since the NC.

Funny that you mention the Camry, since the V6 Camry is quicker than quite a few decent sports cars, but I can't imagine that influences even one annual purchase. Straight line speed is one factor in buying a car, but certainly not the only one.

Just to give you a better idea... look at the US sales number of the M3 (they are traditionally faster from 0-62 mph) :

E30 M3
1985 - 1992............. 4,996

E36 M3
1992 - 1999............. 32,932 (18,961 Coupes + 7,760 Sedans + 6,211 Verts)

E46 M3
2001 - 2006............. 43,779 (26,202 Coupes + 17,577 Verts)

E92/90/93 M3
2007 - as at 2010.... 23,760 (14400 + 4020 + 5340)**

** Global sales figures, as of 2010, were 24,000 E92 + 6,700 E90 + 8,900 E93. For the US sales figures it was considered that they account for up to 60% of the global sales of the V8 M3.

As you can see there's no possible comparison between the HUGE sales numbers of the Miata and those of the M3 throughout the years. I don't know what BMW is waiting for...

Well... maybe a diesel version of the GT86 can be possible afterall... given Toyota's recent interest in this technology.

BMW Group and Toyota Agree to Mid-to-long-term Research Collaboration in Environment-friendly Technologies
Dec 1st 2011

BMW Group to Supply 1.6L and 2.0L BMW Fuel Efficient Diesel Engines to Toyota Motor

Tokio/München - December 1, 2011... BMW Group and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announce that they today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) concerning a mid-to-long-term collaboration on next-generation environment-friendly technologies.

Under the MOU, the two companies agreed on a collaborative research in the field of next-generation lithium-ion battery technologies. Furthermore, they have agreed to identify and discuss other possible collaborative projects.

In addition, Toyota Motor Europe (TME), TMC's European subsidiary, and BMW Group have entered into a contract under which BMW Group is to supply 1.6 liter and 2.0 liter diesel engines to TME starting in 2014. The engines will be installed in certain Toyota-produced vehicles planned for sale in the European market. Through this agreement, Toyota plans to expand its European lineup and sales of fuel-efficient, low CO2-emission diesel-powered vehicles.

Marking the announcement, Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said: "Toyota is the leading provider of environment-friendly series technology in the volume segment and the BMW Group is the most innovative and sustainable manufacturer of premium automobiles. We are now joining forces to further develop environment-friendly technologies and to expand our innovation leadership in each of our segments. Supplying Toyota with our fuel efficient and dynamic diesel engines represents another important step in the planned expansion of our sales activities for engines and powertrain systems."

Representing TMC, President Akio Toyoda said: "It is a great joy and a thrill to enter into this mid-to-long-term collaborative relationship with BMW, a company with its own culture and history from its many years of car manufacturing in Europe, and a company that makes cars that are fun to drive. In the spirit of contributing to furthering the development of the auto industry and society, both companies will bring their wide-ranging knowledge - starting with that concerning environmental technologies - to the table and make ever-better cars."

Dear god not this shit again. Here comes another 30 pages about every random diesel on the market; I might as well start linking articles to Cayenne diesels, Golf GTDs and GL Blutecs to save you the time and effort.

Here's a thought: wait a few months, stop bumping the thread every other hour, and let the manufacturers make their announcements.

It's kind of amusing to watch this spiral further out of control. Mention Kobayashi, see how that goes...

Maybe mix in a fringe F1 driver and a diesel for true humor.

Unfortunately, you can't mention a single lightweight diesel engined driver's car... and that's the REAL problem: so much about fuel efficiency and not a single diesel lightweight REAL sports car. So, fear no more... because besides the Volkswagen Bluesport concept there's few examples to write home about.

As for your thought, well... here's mine: the manufacturers, with some wealthy exceptions, are more concerned to whatever sells better in China right now.

That's why I just love the likes of Toyobaru and Alfa Romeo 4c... what can say, I just want them to be perfect, so some diesel engined car like one of those is mandatory! Please listen to the man, listen to the man... it's never too much

lol, yeah. everyone's bored with these cars by now, bump this thread when something interesting happens such as the release of the BRZ-STi.
