September 3, 2014

BMW brand sales up 11.0 percent – Best August Ever
MINI brand sales down 16.9 percent
BMW Motorcycle sales down 6.0 percent

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – September 3, 2014…
The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported August sales of 32,220 vehicles, an increase of 5.5 percent from the 30,546 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, the BMW Group (BMW and MINI combined) is up 5.4 percent on sales of 245,974 in the first eight months of 2014 compared to 233,326 in the same period in 2013.

BMW Brand Sales – Best August Ever

Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 11.0 percent in August for a total of 27,214 compared to 24,523 vehicles sold in August, 2013. Year-to-date, the BMW brand is up 11.6 percent on sales of 211,005 compared to 188,997 sold in the first eight months of 2013.

“August - and Labor Day in particular – not only mean the end of summer but they’re also the transition to the very important selling season in the final four months of the year and the strong results posted by both new and pre-owned BMW are the best indicator of what we can expect,” said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “Topping 200,000 sales in the U.S. in the first eight months of this year is our new benchmark and I’m especially pleased to see the results for our born-electric BMW i3 and we look forward to the sales launch of the new M4 Convertible next month.”

They really need to get a new 7 series out that's at least on par if not better than the new S-class which is eating up it's sales.

The 3/4 series is doing gangbusters though.

Audi and BMW are in a unique situation/position. Mercedes almost had to come out with the new S-Class, they needed a standout flagship because they no longer have Maybach. With having Bentley and Rolls Royce, Audi and BMW aren't pressured to really come out with something that is close to what the S-Class is as long as it's appropriately updated to what they currently have and if you want that extra notch of luxury, step up to one of the lower Bentley's and Rolls Royce models.

As much as I want the 7-Series to become what the S-Class is to Mercedes, I don't think it's going to happen based on the earlier pictures we've seen. There's no doubt it will fit in as a next-generation model but I don't think it will have that extra sparkle, at the end of the day, BMW still wants the 7-Series to be a drivers car.

why don't they include M volumes in this report as well? Or are they embedded in the 3/4/5 series counts?

I think that the S-class is eating 7-series sales significantly, if the 7 series sales were stable or decreasing slightly in anticipation of the G platform car then that would be fine but it seems the more expensive S-class is dominating the entire segment (below super luxury like Bentley and RR). I think it can still be the driver's full-size luxury car if it ups the luxury, I have no doubt the technology will be there.

I agree that the S-class is more important to MB than the 7 is to BMW, but the next 7-series needs to be very good to compete with the good reviews for the new S class in order to recoup sales.

It'll be good but I think people are going to be seriously disappointed not because the next 7-Series isn't a good car or won't function as intended in this segment but people are going to judge it for something that it isn't or really strives to be.

Will people use the 7-Series as a personal limo? Yes. Will it be loaded with tech and have the bells and whistles? Yes. Can you customize it through BMW Individual? Yes. The new 7-Series is going to do what it's meant to do but it's going to lack that extra notch of luxury because that's just BMW being BMW. The is probably 3rd in this segment but it's good enough if you follow the US sales where the S-Class sold approx. 13k last year to BMW's 10k.

X4 took a ton away from x6 sales. 7 series took a huge hit. Mini may be down but countryman doing well.

Problem with the 7 is not only is not near the S-class. I don't even consider better than the A8 or even the XJ.

I think the new S-class just moved to a new level, beyond this segment.

Mini is in a free fall, something has to change or it's going to be gone in a few years. The new Mini has come in near last place in every auto comparison test vs competition. If it was $3-4K less it would be competitive but it's just not any better than much cheaper cars.

Yeah, BMW needs to hurry and do something about that (at least show something off) before yet another S-Class ends up in the garage.

And the Z4 could be gone any minute now.
I wonder why it never took off. Price? Looks? Handling?

Sad to see MINI tanking like that. They had it sooooo right with the R50/R53 and then just completely cocked the whole thing up.

The s class is the s class; it doesnt need to be good to sell, because there are always plenty of fucking idiots that will still buy it to impress equally idiotic neighbors and golf buddies. Took a ride in one belonging to a family member recently; impressed me about as much as a naked man would impress ellen degeneres. Hideous inside and out, boat-in-stormy-weather handling, frenetic transmission-on-crack....just terrible like all benzes.

I summed it up in one sentence when he asked what I thought as we got back: "shouldve saved 40 grand and bought a kia k900."

Bottom line, the next 7 will remain a better driver and better looking, but will also remain lower on sales chart. Nothing they do will help them suddenly overtake the camry of the luxury barge segment.

The next 7 will be technologically more advanced than the S: lighter with a superior chassis, more economical and sportier.
It remains to see if the new design will be on top too
Mini is just too expensive
