The first GXX Concept Car will Premiere at the Auto China 2014 in Beijing.
The first GXX model to be shown will be a luxury concept model to reflect ever constant changing trends and progression in the luxury segment.
A concept as groundbreaking as what was shown in Shanghai 2007. But reflective of market needs and current innovation.

I've had these on my bike since 2010. Nowhere near $6k. A decent new set (2 wheels) runs between $1500-$2500

Yeah, but the Mavic's priced in that range are 50% heavier than the Lightweights and have an aluminum rim glued to the carbon shell. Not nearly the same thing. Mavic's full carbon wheels are $4k and still aren't nearly as light as the LW's. ENVE gets closer, for less money.

The Reynolds RZR wheels are probably the most comparable in terms of weight, but they're still $4,500 and have had some lateral stiffness issues that the LW's tend not to.

In my other life as a motorcycle rider, I get on the Ducati forums a lot and guys have been using these wheels for years now. I haven't read of any failures yet:

A set of these will run you about $3,800.

Blades on these are full carbon fiber. No problems whatsoever. Here's an example of the manufacturing process for another brand... it's pretty cool stuff considering how pliable the raw sheets are.

point taken, but the technology is proven and has been around long enough to build a reputation under demanding conditions. Your racing tubular examples are of course on the high side of the cost curve to get the true benefits of weight reduction, but you're not gonna use them every day (and are still not $6000+). The torsional rigidity and responsiveness from a midrange clincher wheel is however beneficial year-round in a variety of conditions.

Let's not mention the first-gen R-sys mishaps to the community.

Mods: Apologies for derailing thread.

Haha! I nearly fell for a set of those tubular carbon spokes. Seems like the newer ones don't explode, but it still seems like a silly idea.

I do agree though that carbon is proven in the cycling industry, I trust my carbon frame, bar and wheels as much or more than equivalent aluminum stuff.

We know the GXX 7er is going to go on a diet, which means the BMW is likely to extensively incorporate CFRP, are other cars going to have extensive use with CFRP or will it be a slow process/application like the FXX M3/M4?

The carbon fiber and composites industry has come a long, long way. CF doesn't shatter like glass, and it typically offers phenomenally better properties than metals (depending on the application).

Regarding curb damage, should you manage to hit them hard enough to get all the way through the clear coat/finishing resin, you would still only be able to damage 1-2 plies worth of carbon at the most. The damage could easily be filled back in with resin and polished back to shine, sure the top weave might be slightly imperfect but it will be very hard to notice. These wheels will have a very large ply count and structural integrity will be unaffected. You'll break suspension bits before you fail one of these wheels.
CF it all!!! Suspension, drivelines all of it!!!!

All this CF stuff is neat....but I really think BMW should figure out how to make a fuel pump, injectors and such work together first. Once they can make an even half way reliable vehicle, then spend some R&D on CF.
