orange peel
anyone have any luck getting their dealership or bmw to do something about the excessive orange peel on some of out vehicles. Kind of disappointed with the paint as it shows a lot of this over much of the body. any hints besides paying someone to wet sand the entire car and foot the bill myself?

Hate to say it, but unless there is visibly flawed over or under spray, orange peel of various degrees will show up. Unfortunately, I think wet sanding the entire car is the only option. The only manufacturer that does this (by hand) to my knowledge is Aston Martin. Or maybe it was Bentley? Either way, way more money than BMW price range.

I thought only that one special shade of silver, which ends up costing something like $2k...
I looked at all the M3's on my dealer's lot and the orange peel seemed to be worse on some of the unique M shades - Jerez and Interlagos. I compared to my 2007 E92 space gray and mine seemed to have much less orange peel. That's too bad because I thought IB was stunning... Am I seeing things? Was it an optical illusion in the darker colors? |

You have done nothing but complain about your M since you joined this forum. Let's see its too slow and lacks power, the exhaust is ugly and now the paint is shotty. Did you even look at the car and test drive it before you bought it?

Lexus wet sands their LS models, apparently - I believe it. I am always amazed at the quality of the paintwork on my parents' Lexuses (Lexi?? ) when I wash them - I hate to say it, but noticeably better than that which is on our BMWs |

+1. My IS-F has no orange peel at all and it is not wet sanded either. I am sure it is just the paint process. The AW barely shows it.

exactly im not here to blow up the m3 community im here to make my car as perfect as possible. We all are upgrading our m's because the stock trim is so much better? i was looking for someone who had positive input to give me about approaching bmw so i can follow their footsteps not someone to bash me for noticing my car has orange peel. its no secret. isnt the purpose of this site that we have a group of people knowledgeable about our specific car to ask questions about modification?

+1 for Forum Statistics. Make a poll for it, go wild!
My car either: a) Doesn't have orange peel b) I don't give a crap about it General functioning is important, Oil level (once the low level light comes on), and grip. Besides that it'll still be BMW no matter what.

The orange peel definitely detracts from the car. It is more noticeable on the dark cars especially space gray and jerez black but all the cars I looked at had it. There is no orange peel on the Lexus and Mercedes cars I looked at in the past.

I hear somewhere it because it's a water based paint? Or something else a bit more environmentally friendly than other paints, the downfall being the orange peel effect. Anyone able to confirm this?
