OEM Performance Spoiler 3M Tape Placement

Hey all,

Installed the oem performance spoiler last week and i placed tape in the middle area opposite of the bmw sticker. It seems to not be making complete contact with the trunk, so when you look underneath you can see the tape.

Are you all placing tape in this area? Would prefer some advice because I would like to get a clean fit.

There's a DIY here on how to install it using tape.

I had the dealer install mine with beta link for peace of mind. They charged me about $150 for the beta link and labor here in the UK.

Its a strange angle that the spoiler sits at which makes it that much more difficult with tape. that said i had to remove and re-install mine a couple times before i got it just right. are you using OEM or replica? sometimes the replicas are off on fitment and that makes it that much more difficult to position correctly.

Tips:
Use 3M adhesive prep wipes to help the tape stick and stay stuck or youll notice it start to lift after some speed/time.
Get a second person to help with install

edit: ignore my comment about the replicas; just noticed you said OEM.

Beta link is the right way to do this job, you'll get zero gaps and no issues

I agree.

reason for tape on my install is parts like the spoiler, mirror caps, etc sometimes grow legs and walk away. if anyone decides to take my parts i rather they keep the part and not damage the car/paint. from my understanding(and i could be wrong) betalink is as close to permanent as possible. if anyone tries to take it and is unsuccessful they may leave some damage behind

You're right, damage can be done if trying to rip it off, but beta link is not 100% permanent, it can be removed if one wants to remove (difficult PIA and time consuming).

betalink is definitely a cleaner, more secure install. As others have said though, it can be done with 3m tape. The tape needs to be about as close to the edge as possible, without showing and placement needs to be perfect to avoid gaps or loose spots.

3m is fine. If you really want to be sure, get the 3m 5952 VHB tape.

It will go no where!

I just don't see what the fear is in using beta link

it's really not a matter of the specific type of tape. Any 3m automotive tape will work. It's more about proper prep and placement of the tape and the lip!

prep is key, and you're right the reg molding tape should suffice, but on something with some curvature that may want to lift, check out the VHB line of tapes as they're designed to replace fasteners and literally have been used to pull trains/tractor trailers. And it's a double sided tape!

VHB is the shit and is even stronger than welding in some cases. They use it to attach exterior trim to skyscrapers, such as on the Burj al Arab.

Soooo, pretty sure the OEM spoiler would never come off the car then, without breaking it in half. Might as well use betalink then...lol.

LOL, yes. The good thing about VHB is you can buy it from a lot of local stores and it's pretty idiot-proof as far as how to use it.

i just installed my perf spoiler using the automotive 3M tape and its very firmly planted... ive gone 90+ mph and it hasn't budged a bit, did this 3 days ago.

Im checking it every time i get out and it hasn't moved or lifted... i believe 3M says after about 72 hours the tape is at its max adhesiveness so im sure i will be fine, i will continue to keep and eye on it though
