BMW Has 2 Billion Euro Green Lead Over Daimler

BMW's current focus on reducing its overall fleet CO2 emissions is clear to anyone following the company's newest models and technologies. As with all of the world's auto manufacturers, the company is preparing to meet more stringent emissions standards in the next few years. How well is BMW doing with regard to this goal? Compared to Daimler AG, extremely well.

As cited by Autonews, the current estimate of BMW's green lead over rival Daimler is valued at approximately 2 billion euros. The estimate comes by way of Morgan Stanley auto analyst Stuart Pearson and the current gap between the two company's average fleet CO2 emissions. Specifically, BMW's current average fleet CO2 emissions is 147.9 g/km compared to Daimler's 163.3 g/km.

BMW only needs reduce its fleet CO2 emissions by an additional 7.1% (to 138.1 g/km), compared to Daimler's 19.8% (to 136.4 g/km) in order to satisfy increased EU required CO2 targets in 2015. Failure to do so results in stiff fines.

According to Autonews,
Quote:
BMW has invested about 1.2 billion euros (about $1.7 billion dollars) in the development and launch of CO2-reducing technologies such as stop-start and brake-energy regeneration for its cars. Pearson said BMW's CO2 advantage over its rivals could widen. "BMW is still moving the game forward," the analyst said in a phone interview. The BMW spokesman said the automaker aims to reduce its CO2 fleet emissions by at least 25 percent between 2008 and 2020.

Gareth Hession, JATO's vice president of research, said Daimler has been hurt by Smart.

"I think they were expecting better things from their Smart brand to try to underpin their [CO2] results, but Smart isn't delivering," he said. "There is a real ceiling on Smart's volume because it is a pretty expensive vehicle to produce."
Besides avoiding fines, what advantage does this lead entail for BMW? BMW spokesman Pearson says that BMW's CO2 emissions lead over its German premium rival would result in improved pricing power as its main rival races to add technology to close the gap.

And stiff green fines would just be passed onto the consumer, so thanks BMW for making green, affordable cars.

Well done BMW. With so many models & projects underway like, activeE, megacity, i projects, CS Concepts...it is quite plain even to layman customers to find BMW is more committed to go green than its competitors. As its fan, I share the pride.

They are also considerably ahead of Audi (VAG) including all the umbrella brands.

That's interesting as what we get in the States is anemic VW turbo fours in the A4/A5. One of the reasons I like BMW is a great level of performance is available in the regular line and still more is available with M cars. With Audi and Mercedes the regular line is often weak, forcing one to go to S line (which is nothing close to BMW M) at Audi and AMG at MB. AMG offers tons of horsepower, but lacks the overall balance of a BMW M car.

BMW is developing a 3 Cylinder diesel Supercar in response the the SLS.

Very well said. That's why the two started collaborating.
BMW/Apple creates a new product, then everyone follows with a generic.

I think you're right.
They seem to know that getting ahead of the curve can be very advantageous.

It's a smart move on their part!

I don't care if they have a green lead, purple lead or yellow lead. It's been clear for years that there is no such thing as global warming, so reducing CO2 emissions has no practical purpose (other than creating jobs for a bunch of bureaucrats) and is a complete waste of money. Imagine if all these billions were spent on improving safety or performance.
