MotoGP: eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland (07/13/14)

“If you watch MotoGP you think those guys are just superhuman” - Adrian Newey

Here we are, boys! Already halfway through the 2014 season and it feels like it just began. But we've seen quite a bit this 2014 season.
So with all that has come so far and all that has been, what will we see on July 13th in Germany on the Sachsenring? What will MotoGP's German Grand Prix bring? Will we see another wet race? Will Dani rally against his team mate? Will Rossi go against the grain again on tire choice and possibly NOT opt for the hard plus dunlops?

Will Marquez make it 9 out of 9? Will Rossi be able to break the streak? Marquez himself said it can not last forever....Who will fulfill that prophecy?

Will Marquez remember his 2013 victory here or will Crutchlow remember his 2nd place finish? Will Rossi be tired of P3 and sparring with MM93 to take P1?....

**Turn 11 is the one to watch this year. Do you remember last year at Sachsenring? Who remembers all the crashes there? Dovi, Crutchlow and Iannone all crashed. Hayden crashed. Dorna Safety Board Loris Capirossi tested the passage in March on a BMW S1000RR due to the amount of crashes last year. They all agreed that this turn will need to change so this is the last year we'll see this configuration**

Introduction:
Car and bike races have been held on closed public roads in the area around the town of Chemnitz, Germany since the 1920s and were still taking place until as recently as 1990. It was decided, however, that the five mile course through such a densely populated area was no longer suitable and a new circuit was built five miles west of Chemnitz in 1996. Although mainly used as a driver training centre and road transport safety station, Sachsenring first hosted MotoGP in 1998 and many improvements have taken place since then, including a drastic layout enhancement in 2001. Numerous tight corners make it one of the slower tracks on the calendar but there is never any shortage of close racing action

GREAT NEWS!!
Rossi has signed his Yamaha MotoGP contract extension and will ride for Yamaha factor team until at least 2016!

Rumor: Bradl might return to Moto2 if he does not find the right contract in premier....interesting choice...

I think Lorenzo will rally after his horrible outing at the Dutch TT. If it is a wet track again then he wont be 3rd...

I think Lorenzo will still be off the podium. Rossi will ride harder now that the contract negotiations are over, and he can really just bury his head. I say:
  • Marquez
  • Rossi
  • Pedrosa
  • Dovi
  • Lorenzo

Haha! I'm pushin' it.

I'd like to see Rossi in at least second! Part of my reasoning for putting Pedrosa where I did is that, historically, he is very fast here infact holding a couple of the records.

Marc Marquez:
“It was a tough and complicated weekend in Assen, but I was really happy to win a race under such tricky conditions. Now we have Sachsenring which is a nice circuit, but quite special as it’s so small! Last year I had a good race but we must remember that neither Dani nor Jorge (Lorenzo) were able to race so this year I look forward to racing them, especially as Dani is so strong at this track.”

Dani Pedrosa:
“It was a tricky weekend in Assen and in those kind of races, it’s easy to lose many points in the Championship, so I’m pleased with our podium finish. Now we’re heading to Germany where I had a disappointing weekend last year after being declared unfit to race due to my crash on Saturday.”

“I always enjoy racing at Sachsenring and finding the right set up is critical - especially as you spend a lot of time on the left, but the fastest corner is to the right, so tyre performance will be key. I’m looking forward to getting there to make up for missing last year.”

Andrea Dovizioso:
“The result at Assen was very important for me and the Ducati Team, but I don’t think we have the speed in dry conditions to be able to aim for the podium too much. As always however we must push 100% and improve over last year. In my opinion Sachsenring is too short and too tight for MotoGP, but I think the bike has improved from last year so we have to show the difference at every race, like we did at Assen.”

Cal Crutchlow:
I’ve never ridden at the Sachsenring on the Ducati, but I like the track and went really well there last year, when I was second in qualifying and finished second in the race, which is one of my best results ever in MotoGP.”

Nicky Hayden:
“Germany is a very tight, twisty track with almost all the corners connected so there's no time to breath and you must stay so focused for the whole lap. With no more Laguna I think it must be the shortest lap time of any track we go to so every tenth of a second is precious and you have to really claw for every tenth. At the same time it also has some very fast corners that I like and normally I enjoy this track. The race is here is always very long with a lot of time spent on the left tyre edge so its important to find a setting to find good edge grip and make the tyre last on the left. On the other hand if the conditions are cool it's very important to get heat and keep heat on the right side, particularly on the front tyre with there being only three right hand corners. I know its not exactly my best moment right now but me and the team have to stay strong and keep pushing!”

Hiroshi Aoyama:
“Sachsenring is a different circuit, peculiar and special. You won't find anything like it anywhere in the world. It is small but at the same time technical. The most positive thing for us is that with it being so small you don't need so much power and that evens things up a little in MotoGP. I am sure we can be competitive there after doing a good job last time out in Holland, where we had a strong first half of the race. Unfortunately the second half of the race wasn't so good but we will be working to follow up on the positives from Assen to try and be more competitive this weekend and more consistent over full race distance. I like the track and it should suit our bike well so I am sure we can have a good result this weekend.”

Aleix Espargaro:
We will try this week to repeat another strong performance at Sachsenring. It's one of the slowest circuits on the MotoGP calendar and the layout with its tight corners should suit our machine, so I'm very confident for the race."

Colin Edwards:
"We need to get on the bike and figure something out, make some big changes in one direction or the other and get some feeling,” said the Texan, whose Sachsenring memories include a dramatic fire incident in his rookie 2003 season."

Yes they are! But they'll be receiving asymmetric rear slicks which should help with this track

Germania | Sachsenring
Difficulty for the braking system:

MEDIUM
<--------------------------------------->

With just 4 km in length, the Sachsenring track is the shortest circuit of the championship. The track is narrow and winding and despite only 4 cut outs requires a not negligible performance of the brakes due to both the quite demanding braking and the presence of a mixed part where it is difficult for the brakes to cool

Alvaro Bautista:
"The Sachsenring is a very small distance and has many slow corners. Again this year we have as 2013 major problems heranzureichen in fast and fluid bends at the level of the top drivers and direct competitors, but we see in slow buckling traditionally much better from, "he says. After a disastrous start to the season with three losses in series in the first three races of the World Cup Sixth last year has caught not only since his podium finish at Le Mans again

Scott Redding:
"have my first rain race in the MotoGP survived in Assen and now wants to of course pick up some points at Sachsenring and defend my position."

Stefan Bradl (I mentioned this above):
"My priority is to stay with Honda and LCR," Bradl told Speedweek. "But if I cannot get top material in MotoGP I have to consider going back to Moto2 for one year. (Mika) Kallio has gone back from MotoGP and is winning, Toni Elias won the Moto2 title in his first year in the class after returning from MotoGP."

Pol Espargaro:
""Last race was my first experience in the wet aboard a MotoGP bike and despite the end result not being a true reflection of my potential on the bike, I still felt the best I have so far this year on the Yamaha which included topping the opening practice session. I feel really optimistic of a strong result this weekend, whatever the weather decides to do and last year I obtained a 3rd place podium finish on my way to the World Championship title in Moto2. With the track being very tight and with not much of a straight, there’s no rest therefore we are on it for the entire race, so for sure it will be a challenging one. I feel strong aboard the bike at the moment and I am convinced that I can at least challenge for, if not clinch, the position of the leading satellite bike in Germany."

Bradley Smith:
""After the conditions caused a bit of a strange race at Assen, I was still able to put together a really strong race pace when the track dried out which is really positive. At Sachsenring I hope to emulate this and scoop a top result. My joint best position of 6th was achieved here last year and with the nature of the circuit suiting the Yamaha I'm confident we can do even better this week. The tyres will be vital at this track as there are 10 left corners but only 3 right, plus it could rain, yet I remain certain of my ability aboard the Yamaha and I know we can do well this race for round 9 of the championship. I am primed and ready to gun for a top five this weekend, I look forward to putting on a great show plus riding the waterfall again!"

An announcement should come very shortly that 2015 will see MotoGP back at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. In fact, this is where next season may start. After 18 years, they're back in Austria!

I like this article and happen to agree with Bruce. What are your thoughts?

MotoGP 2014 Sachsenring Preview
Honda, Marquez look to repeat in Deutschland

By Bruce Allen July 9, 2014
motorcycle.com

Going back to 2007, the Repsol Honda team has won five of the last seven MotoGP events at The Sachsenring, Ground Zero of German motorsports. Dani Pedrosa enjoyed a hat trick here between 2010 and 2012, while teammate Marc Marquez, for whom we have officially run out of superlatives, won last year, the first of four consecutive wins that would culminate in his claiming the 2013 premier class title. There exists no credible reason to believe the top two steps of the podium will not be draped in Repsol orange, red and black on Sunday afternoon.

The longer The Streak continues, the harder it gets to suggest that someone other than Marquez will take the checkered flag on Sundays. A number of other publications, notably MotoGP.com, rattle on week after week about how Pedrosa, or the strongmen of the Movistar Yamaha team, Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, look capable of heading off the 21 year-old Catalan. Our commitment to keeping it real, however, requires us to acknowledge that, barring an unforeseeable mechanical failure or carelessness on the part of another rider early in the race, Marquez is going to win in Germany. The guy does not beat himself.

This, then, is another instance in which we would prefer, all things being equal, to be wrong. Such was the case in 2010 when we predicted that Valentino Rossi was in for a miserable two years headlining the factory Ducati team. Or last year at this time, when we predicted that Cal Crutchlow, on his way to Ducati Corse, would trail both Tech 3 Yamaha riders, Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith, in the final 2014 standings. All of us have heard the adage in the paddock that MotoGP is 80% rider and 20% bike, an observation borne out by Casey Stoner in 2007. Marc Marquez is the only other rider we’ve seen since then who could probably win on the Ducati; as intelligent (and well-paid) as he seems, there is virtually no chance we’ll ever see him on the beastly Desmosedici.

Let’s just pile on with one more observation about Marquez and The Sachsenring. He’s been racing grand prix bikes there since he was 15 years old. The last time he lost in Germany, he was 16. It’s one of his favorite tracks. The summer break just can’t come soon enough.

Recent History at The Sachsenring
Up until last year, one had to regard Repsol #2 Dani Pedrosa as The Man at this track. He won there in 2010, 2011 and again in 2012. During the second of his three consecutive wins, in 2011, he led teammate and eventual championship winner Stoner and Yamaha gunner Lorenzo on a merry chase through the German countryside. Stoner appeared to have second place in the bag until Lorenzo slipped past him on Lap 30, punking him by a tenth. Stoner, having lost the battle, would win the war, taking the next three rounds, while Lorenzo crashed hard in practice at Philip Island, losing the tip of a finger in the accident, and ending his hopes for that year.

In 2012, Pedrosa again spent the afternoon with Stoner glued to his rear wheel. But, late on the last lap, the racing gods intervened, sending the Australian into a dramatic, long, agonizing lowside that looked like a slow-motion replay of itself. Suddenly, Pedrosa was home free, while a stunned Lorenzo moved up to second place, and an even more surprised Andrea Dovizioso waltzed onto a podium finish in third. It marked the first time in 22 starts that Stoner had failed to finish. Lorenzo, thus blessed, went on to claim the 2012 title, with no clue it might possibly be his last.

12 wins in 18 races.Last year, while both Lorenzo and Pedrosa sat out nursing broken wings, Marquez took the win by 1.6 seconds over a determined Cal Crutchlow, with Rossi another eight seconds back. Pedrosa had been leading the championship through Round 7, and 2013 appeared to finally be his year until he went flying over his handlebars on Saturday morning, landing hard, out of title contention once again. Marquez took the lead in the 2013 title race that day and never let go, despite a picky and unnecessary disqualification at Phillip Island that made the final standings appear closer than they actually were.

A Reversal of Fortune at Movistar Yamaha

Had you been living in a cave in Borneo for the past two weeks, and I told you that the factory Yamaha team had signed one of its riders for the next two seasons, would you have guessed that the rider in question was Valentino Rossi? That Yamaha would sign the aging legend, who will be 37 when this latest contract runs out, before doing a deal with Jorge Lorenzo? Furthermore, had I told you that a premier class rider admitted to the press after Assen that he was frightened by the wet conditions and was thus unable to compete for a podium, would you have guessed I was talking about Karel Abraham, or double world champion Lorenzo?

We have been suggesting here for some time that Marc Marquez has gotten inside Lorenzo’s head, where he is causing all kinds of problems for the Mallorcan, this last bit of candor being but the most recent. Now, it appears that Rossi, once again, is the alpha male in the factory Yamaha garage; shades of 2008 and 2009, years in which the immensely talented Lorenzo could not stand being #2 to his teammate, a situation that became so desperate the teams had to build a wall down the center of the garage to keep the two separated. Lorenzo found it difficult to be Rossi’s wingman before winning two titles; I doubt he will find it any easier now.

Six months ago I suspected Rossi was in his last contract with Yamaha, and that Lorenzo would be with them until 2020. Now, 180 degrees later, it appears Rossi will finish his career on The Big Blue Machine, while Lorenzo could conceivably go looking for greener – or redder, or turquoiser (?) – pastures. The domino effect engendered by Marc Marquez is, indeed, having some unforeseen consequences

@954Stealth

I agree with everything except for the reason for the wall. The tire manufacturer secrecy was the initial reason for the wall. Rider issues are the reason it remained.
