Manual Z4 M40i

BMW sent me an email today, announcing the above. Nice colour, nice idea with the manual transmission. Any takers?

"The BMW Z4 M40i Handschalter Pack is designed for true motoring enthusiasts seeking the most engaging driving experience. For the first time in the current BMW Z4, a 3.0 litre straight-six engine meets six-speed manual transmission to deliver the ultimate in open-top exhilaration. Finished in eye-catching Frozen Deep Green metallic, it looks just as breathtaking as it drives"

Discussed to death on the Z4 forum. Apparently none have been ordered in the UK yet, apart from dealer demos. Only one colour combination available for the UK, although available elsewhere in other colours!

Personally I would love a B58 in a manual (not a Supra though) but not a fan of the G29 and HATE that colour.....and the price tag.

Love the colour scheme and the gearbox - but the price is ridiculous as with most cars these days and to be honest the i5 Touring in the same email was more my thing... although also too expensive!

and you still seemingly need to spend £3k on extras.... madness. I only paid £68k for an M5 in 2019 and £64k for an RS4 Carbon edition in 2020...

I think I am out of touch...

You're not alone

For half the price, you can get a nice used V6 F-type - which I'd rather have anyway, never mind the £30k+ saving..

I made enquiries with everyone’s favourite online BMW dealer, don’t be so put off by the price. Low £50s.

Also I saw a comment about options, I’d suggest forget these. I spec’d everything on my recent Z4 mostly useless. The adaptive lights for example are not matrix LED, very poor, the Drivifm Assistnst Pro is a generation ago from the excellent M4 G82 and the Model Y, very clunky and more akin to VCC than anything keeping you in lane. Also this is a car you want to drive and not be guided.

Simple spec and no options honestly is best.

I’d just recommend the Comfort Access as you need this to be able to open and close the roof with the Remote Fob, very handy.

Great package but I think I’d prefer a roof these days, so much tree sap here. I like the green colour but it’s Matt so quite a nightmare to maintain.

I’m out!

Revised manual and similar to the highly praised 6MT in the sister car Toyota Zupra. 👌🏻

Looks very agreeable and is the only new BMW I've seen so far where the new corporate snout actually looks OK.

Glad they've revised the manual as Germans historically have made some dreadful manual gearboxes (apart from Porsche) that don't like being rushed and feel rubbery and vague.

If it had a Honda Type R quality of shift, I'd be up for it, otherwise I'll take DCT or ZF8. After 35 years of manuals, I'm over them (especially in traffic), unless they are rewarding to use.....which they never were, apart from Hondas.

It ain't gonna be anywhere near TBH. The gearbox in the Type R (FK8 at least) was an engineering masterpiece.

I have two manual BMs, both are 2 litre petrol engines (one an N20 and a B48), both 2016 models, both 25k ish miles so you would expect them to have identical gearboxes. Yet I find the one in the Z4 much more precise and nicer than my F31. Must be something to do with layouts and linkages in different 'platforms'.

I was concerned when looking at manual e92 M3's over the DCT, especially after having had an S2000, an EP3 type R and having driven an FK8. I really wanted to experience that connection with the V8 via the clutch and manual box, but was concerned the feel of the box would detract from the experience. Mine has a slightly modified shifter, but only the gear knob I believe, giving a shorter throw, but although it's not as precise and nice to use as the S2000, it definitely doesn't blunt the experience. It feels much more substantial too, the S2000 felt like even a slightly poor shift would hurt the gearbox, and many out there grind going into 2nd and 3rd gear, the M3 box feels indestructible in comparison and suits the car. I love it! I'm away with work for a couple of days driving the 520d, and can't wait til Saturday when I can drive the M3 again.

I like the car and the green and tan theme but it's just a pity that BMW have never made a good manual gearbox, which is strange given what they stood for "UDM"
