The Horsepower Era

The Horsepower War might very well end soon.
400hp was a rather big deal in the 90s, but today, you can purchase a Hyundai with over 400hp. With manufactures focusing more on power to weight ratio and fuel economy, we might be living in the tail end of this awesome time period.
Will horsepower in cars keep on increasing or will cars stay in the same horsepower range of where they are now? What are your thoughts?

doubt it. It might level off, but I can't see the power dropping off on performance cars.

I think the govt is going to intervene and make 100hp max output and 100mpg minimum. Then there will be renegades that build high hp cars and steal fuel like mad max style. Let the fun begin!

Well, the cars are getting heavier so they need more power to move them. So it is not just a progression of adding power - they need to power to get the same performance. So the actual performance hasn't increased quite as much as the horsepower would lead you to believe.

Just look at how big a regular Accord has become. Yeah, it now has 250+hp but it needs it to move the 1000+ lbs increase in weight.

I'm guessing at some point we will stop using horses as our unit of measurement.

The main focus is to make a car lighter; hence the use of lightweight materials. Horsepower will always remain a struggle-one wants to outperform another.

I thought this years ago, but it doesn't seem to end. Now we have a 660hp Mustang !!! It used to be that 0-60 in 5 seconds was considered supercar fast, now we are breaking into the 2-3 range.

Exactly! 20 years ago, sub 5s from a Porsche Turbo was lightening fast. Now a full size sedan can hit 4.5! I always wondered how much faster can cars be, 0-60 in 1-2 seconds in 10 years or sooner?

HP will go up as long as they can make More HP while be More and More efficient, 1995 5.0 mustang made 225hp, today that same displacement 5.0 mustang makes 440hp and gets better MPG with Gobs more Torque.

My prognostication - horsepower is near peak but weight will continue to decline (thanks to lightweight materials) juxtaposed against bigger torque (corresponding with the phase out of naturally aspirated engines and further accelerated by the massive torque of electric motors)
