Miata (only if he would fit and many of us don't).
E36 in great condition
E46 is now falling in that price range.
Nothing that breaks on an E36 convertible is new it is a well sorted out car that you can fix without dealer visits...

^wow must be a buyers market in the us, I got me e92 for a bit above 30k, same week my brother got his s2k for 15k in sweet condition (it was a good deal tho)
Btw my car had 80k kms and his had 75k kms

I would look for a miata (although it is a bit girly). It is an awesome drivers car and you can do a ton of stuff to them.
