This part again is hard to get right, seems like I'm somewhere between .04-.07mm, but if the diff rotates even slightly the measurement is off. Going to try painting the ring teeth with gear marking compound next.

Pattern looks central and uniform enough for my satisfaction. I think this matters a lot more when you swap a ring/pinion out.

Checking both sides also.

Could have done this already but next step, need to install the locking rings that came with the new flange seals into the diff on each side. This same video explains this perfectly starting at the 3:37 mark:

The flanges just push in by hand once you have them lined up. I put the seals on the flanges and coated the outer ring of each seal with black gasket maker, saw in one of the videos and figured may as well. The seals face the flanges. I did also tap the flanges with a rubber mallet but I don't think it did anything. Will finish scraping the old gasket rubber off the diff cover next and fill the diff with fluid, almost there!

EDIT: Made a mistake here (see post #83 below). I think I may have coated the seals with gasket maker and inserted them well before I inserted the flanges. If the gasket maker hardened and the seals weren't inserted far enough, that's probably what caused my flanges to not be inserted far enough to lock.

Not the best gasket bead but getting smashed anyway.

Installing plugs and then fluid in and the top goes on!

Using Giken diff fluid for break-in, see link in my first post for the reason why. Fluid in, diff sealed up, and installed! Less pictures here but the motorcycle/transmission lift was key, also used it to reinstall my x-pipe. Of note, the third differential bolt does need to go in a certain direction or at least I maintained the direction from the factory, see parts photo below.

You might get a "silent" DTC warning about the car going into neutral when it wasn't expecting. Just FYI. I did.
Good call here, after I took the DCT out of neutral I scanned and cleared the code.

I used a Foxwell NT510 for this.

So diff install is complete and I absolutely can't wait to try it. That said I'm waiting on a new custom suspension setup and it will be a ~3-4 weeks until I have that in, will report back with street and track impressions at a later date.

FWIW I saw diff temps between 280-300 deg f in my 1995 M3 when I raced it. I bought the Rogue Engineering diff cover after I saw those temps and it dropped temps by 10-20 deg f, depending on outside air temp.

In the process of tackling a leaking seal (maybe), idk where it's coming from seal looks fine lol but doing it anyway.
Do you know the tq spec for these 8 bolts? I saw a DIY saying 19NM just seems very little.

Good question, I got mine from Jonathan at Shaftworks USA - LINK, he used to work at OS Giken and could certainly get an answer for you.

And just to note, mine was in stock and ready to ship when I ordered it.

I'm not sure, sorry. I imagine I tightened them more than 19NM though and don't anticipate any issues.

Sorry…same side bearings as the E46 M3…lol

I'm pretty sure the shims are R&P and case specific. If you're swapping the LSD unit then there is a low chance of having to change a shim.

I'm up to 6.5 diffs rebuilt (6 e46, .5 E9X) and only had to do a shim adjustment on 2 where I changed the R&P. It's a .5 on The E9X M3 because I only rebuilt the LSD and replaced the carrier bearings.

Wanted to share some critical feedback here. Diff has been awesome for three or four track days, including running scrub slicks at COTA for 2 days! PR's set at each track with all my new goods(lots more than the diff) and old tires at my home track even.

Now on to the critical but also embarrassing part. Last week I was driving on the street and one of my half-axles slipped out of the diff!!! Lost power, towed to a trusted shop and thank goodness no damage was done. Apparently I made a mistake and did not push that flange in far enough for the lock rings to snap into place!!!!! So frustrating but super glad it did not happen on track. All back together now and the shop assured me the flanges locked on re-install. They pulled hard on each side after inserting to test. They also grabbed new lock rings and seals just to be sure and inspected the spline teeth of the diff before reinstalling. Fresh fluid also, which I needed to do anyway since break-in was complete.

Please learn from my mistake here, push those flanges in far enough to lock!!! Also, it is possible that the flange was locked and came unlocked due to a bad lock ring, I kind of doubt that though, more likely I made a mistake.

The other part of the review, yes the new diff absolutely locks up faster on track. My old OE diff locked up too though, so this wasn't as crazy as a difference as I imagined it to be. I do notice some improvements on threshold braking which is probably in part to the diff also, going to explore and push more on that front and will report back with any other thoughts.

Also of note, my old diff had 90k+ miles on it anyway, so probably smart to replace as pre-emptive maintenance with that in mind. I regret not being more careful on the flange/lock ring part but happy to share the mistake.

Follow up on this thread

Hello,

First things first....... Thank you "Mobbin" for the pointers and help.
I just wanted to add a little info that became important as I was doing an OS Giken LSD install. Now, some and maybe most people will not have this issue, but others will most certainly have this issue. The diff carrier needs to be set with the proper preload. This is especially important should you track your car. When you reinstall the bearing carriers with the stock shims (left and right side) you should test your preload. In my case the preload was so little that there was significant side to side play.... basically no preload and play. I had to source a shim kit which is extremely expensive. But there is really no way around it.
