Duel Pursuits - F80 vs. F82

Some end up very similar, yet with small distinct touches. Others might drastically diverge into worlds apart - and this concept is the basis for what you see here today. Yes, if you are wondering, we did struggle to resist the usual "ketchup and mustard" references!

While the team here at PSI knew well in advance that our M4 Club Sport project was bound for SEMA and beyond, through several drastic evolutions, our friend Joe started with an entirely different car, and then continued on his own path. While there are a few basic similarities between our two approaches - mostly in that they are both the current F8x platform - in some ways you couldn't ask for a greater contradiction. At their core, one is a yellow four-door M3 with manual transmission, and one is an orange two-door M4 with DCT. Night and day comes to mind.

If anything, our opposing processes and styles prove yet again that creativity plays a large part in the art of modifying a car, and two end results at opposite ends of the spectrum can certainly be appreciated by everyone involved. Rather than finding yourself stuck in the rut of having largely the same modifications as several others, realize that there are an ever-growing combination of colors, brands and variations out there - certainly far more than we have installed on these two M cars.

By staging a duel here today, even though each build is worlds apart, we can find a lot of common ground between these two polar opposites. We hope you can too!

White Paper - Matt's Mineral White F80 M3

We don't encounter too many with his particular brand of OCD either - and by that we mean the best possible kind. His step-by-step detailing guides are in-depth enough to be on a professional level, and it is with this laser focus he envisioned the first round of modifications for his pristine Mineral White F80 M3.

Ordered with a 6-speed manual and SO interior, this new M car didn't make it very long before the ideas started flowing, and the results are mild yet effective, as you can see here. We understand the Akrapovic system may be soon departing, but we have no doubt whatever follows will be money, in every sense of the word.

Thanks!

Since today is Thursday, and this car is now officially sold, we thought we should include this amazing build here for all you E46 M3 fans.

Look up the adjective “complete” in the dictionary, and you will notice two definitions.

1. Having all the necessary or appropriate parts.
2. (often used for emphasis) To the greatest extent or degree; total.

What you see before you is quite possibly the ultimate manifestation of a “complete” BMW E46 M3. Rather than simply allowing us to make this determination for you, however, consider the inclusive scope involved with this build. Beginning with an option-loaded 2004 SMG in Jet Black with Imola Red interior, it was quickly determined that the focus would be on stance and power output. Pure grunt is nothing without a capable chassis to effectively put it down to the road, and the E46 chassis can handle plenty of steam.

Most visually obvious is the perfect ride height provided by the Bilstein PSS coilover units and those meaty Volk TE37 Super Lap wheels with Diamond Black finish in aggressive 18x9.5” fitment. Filling out the wheel arches with tenacity are a set of Michelin Pilot Supersport 265/35/18 tires, although we suspect it may be more like a 30-section rear sidewall by the time the owner gets done burning off the excess. Rounding out the chassis modifications are the AKG Red RTabs, Bimmerworld FCABs, AKG Red subframe bushings and TMS rear subframe reinforcement - all of which are a lot of letters that add up to a ridiculous amount car control and an innate sense of road holding when behind the wheel.

Trodding on the loud pedal tends to catch unsuspecting onlookers off guard, as this is no mundane, humdrum inline six. Lurking under the hood, in all its force-fed glory, is a fully built S54 with forged pistons and lower compression to accommodate the Active Autowerke C38-91 Stage 2+ supercharger kit. With 14psi on tap, this custom-assembled powerplant puts approximately 520 raging horsepower to the rear wheels, usually resulting in a ferocious tire-melting party, followed by neck-snapping acceleration when grip is discovered.

Allowing all of this combustion to breathe easily is an Active Autowerke Gen 7 manifold and charge piping, complete fuel system, and AA’s proprietary methanol injection setup - all professionally tuned and calibrated. A Southbend ceramic clutch keeps matters tied together when gears are required to mesh together. To route spent gases out the back, an Active Autowerke header leads into a Bimmerworld 3.5" resonated race exhaust, exiting just below a Bimmerworld carbon fiber rear diffuser.

For all the fire and brimstone happening under the surface, the rest of the exterior is surprisingly restrained, in keeping with good clean taste. The front kidney grilles are black, a pair of quad projector headlights from Lightwerks cut through the detritus, the reflectors have been paint-matched, and a shade of tint covers the corner lenses, but the remainder is all BMW. Inside, a custom fabricated panel allows a striking array of VEI wideband, AFR and boost gauges to mount perfectly in the ashtray. Billet SMG shift paddles complement the OEM brushed aluminum trim, and Euro coding abounds.

What, then, are we to make of this ravishing creation? While we are indeed proud that all work except the engine build was completed here by PSI, it should be mentioned that the owner, one of our team, might be persuaded to part with his tour de force if the right offer presented itself. There exists a paltry 83k miles on the car itself, and scarcely 6,000 miles on the rebuilt motor/supercharger/meth/fuel system/bushings. Does E46 M3 life get much more complete than this? It is a question to be pondered, given the complexity of the BMW arena at large.

Complete or not, we must concede that this amazing machine is truly an individual among the masses, and represents creativity rather than conformity. Such deliberations are rarely straightforward. We don’t often lapse into existential conversations here at the PSI shop, but when we do, a beautifully built car like this one reminds us once again that what really matters is our own personal absolutes. And as the sun sets and daylight fades over another epic generation of BMW's vaunted sports car, one truth remains: we absolutely love this M3!

Legend tells of a warrior that moved in the shadows, striking at will without warning, only to disappear before the enemy caught even a glimpse. While we here at PSI don't always believe in legends, what we do believe in are diehard enthusiasts with a true passion for BMW and motorsport, and the friends we make within that category. Perhaps one of the clearest examples of this single-minded focus is the owner of this unforgettable E92 335is. Originating from South Florida, they came to us with a simple goal: to create one of the most unique and purposeful cars of its kind in the country. It needed to be fast and effective on a race track or road course while maintaining a level of visual appeal. Only the very best solutions were to be used, enabling the user to slip in and exact the maximum amount of damage before fading into the distance.

It's truly refreshing to have conversations with individuals who think these kinds of terms. Perhaps you know one. We discussed ideas, laid out plans, and worked late into the night to ensure this project came together correctly. PSI doesn't have a reputation of doing things halfway, so when we commit, it's full speed ahead. Immediately we knew that everything had to begin with the chassis. In motorsport, more time and effort is put into the chassis than virtually anywhere else. Steering, braking and suspension are incredibly crucial to quick lap times - especially the latter two. Power is great to have, but without a way to channel that power to the ground on the track, that energy is often lost or dissipated through loss of traction or excess body movement. Similarly, without reliable stopping ability, unwanted seconds are added with increased braking distances and the inability to turn in properly before hitting the apex.

For the perfect ride height while maintaining good compliance, we installed a set of KW Clubsport coilovers that allow for fine-tuning the critical compression and rebound attributes of a suspension setup. In front of those are a complete high-visibility StopTech 355mm/345mm big brake kit with calipers painted in Ithaca Verde for maximum contrast with the body color and wheels. More on that aspect in a moment. These monster units ensure fade-free speed reduction, lap after lap, while the sturdy SPEC Stage 2 clutch and UUC short shifter enable quick, fluid movement between gears. A gorgeous set of Apex EC-7 18" wheels wrapped in Nitto NT05s help reduce weight, look fantastic, and grip like a cat being held over a pool.

We wanted maximum chassis stiffening, so a full bolt-in roll bar was sourced from Fall-Line Motorsports, also painted Ithaca Verde, and a snug set of the venerable Recaro Pole Position seats were fastened down, using Macht Schnell floor mounts. For FIA-level restraints, we turned once again to Sabelt, who delivered an amazing 6-point harness to hold the driver in place while engaged in combat. Behind everything, working in concert with the roll bar, is a new PSI Edition alcantara rear seat delete and closeout with custom stamped aluminum panels. While we have not advertised the PSI Edition line much as of yet, a build on this level requires some truly innovative touches, and this one delivers in spades.

To guide the assault, a BMW M Performance alcantara steering wheel with Ithaca Verde stripe was installed, and a P3 Cars boost vent gauge monitors vital signs. Power is delivered in short order by a BMS JB4 for N54, BMW DCI, and a healthy pair of VRSF catless downpipes. Our good friends and neighbors at Active Autowerke, who have teamed up with us on a great many projects in the past, supplied a charge pipe and BOV, their excellent front-mount intercooler and a full stainless exhaust system. The careful combination of all these parts ensures a never-ending surge of building acceleration off the line and out of each corner.

Last but certainly not least, we addressed the exterior. Again, it was decided to go big or go home, so the entire roof was removed and an OEM E92 M3 carbon fiber roof and headliner replaced it. Needless to say, not only does it look amazing, the functionality of a lower center of gravity serves a significant purpose while cornering. Additionally, OEM E92 M3 side mirrors were painted in Ithaca Verde to match the 335is badges, the BMW Performance carbon fiber rear spoiler’s CRT stripe, and the i8 style front grilles. Completing the aggressive motorsport approach is an Arkym carbon fiber front lower spoiler, adding that extra bit of additional downforce.

While the original paint color was black, we had a matte gray wrap applied by Carbon Wraps Orlando, and the effect is mouthwatering when paired up with the black wheels, carbon fiber roof and those unmistakeable Ithaca Verde accent pieces. In the end, we created a machine designed for relentless attack during competition events, and integrated the highest quality parts with ingenuity and creativity. This is not a BMW for the faint-hearted, and while we don't wish to start a mass panic, perhaps while at your next SCCA or HPDE you may wish to check your surroundings more carefully than usual. A ghostly apparition may suddenly appear, and just like that . . . it will be gone.
