Despite the memes, BMW's wide-mouthed 4 Series and 7 Series have posted massive sales

Will this encourage BMW to make the grilles bigger and bigger on other models?

That is because the i4 and i7 are counted as part of the 4 and 7 series.

There’s a reason there’s an old saying, “there’s no accounting for taste.” We live in an increasingly tasteless world.

Eh, correlation is not causation. Who's to say they wouldn't sell more cars without the huge grilles. No one knows, with the data at hand. To think otherwise is silly.

Also BTW I do realize that I'm actually quoting the 1st line of the article. Not addressing you specifically.

Assuming it's factual, I'm hardly surprised considering BMW is increasingly shifting its design language to suit new markets rather than North America and Europe. What that means for me is I'm simply not a buyer in the future because I have no interest in the design language. I didn't think I'd get here at the ripe ole age of 38 but here we are.

for me, the M3 still the best-looking BMW grille ever(1st pic) but somehow the monster grille in the 2nd pic also intrigues me

Space SilverX1 Lots of subtle mods on that car. It's a beautiful example. Wish mine looked as great as it does. Yours?

Yes, that lovely M3 is sitting in my garage right now. (in my dreams!)

I called Zurich and told them to move some money around so I could buy that M3... The banker said "sir, you only have 2500 Swiss francs in your account here, stop calling us... tschüss!" That was why I was unable to outbid the guy who bid USD$250,000

Bingo! All car co's had record sales in 2023, most had larger increases than BMW. MB's are getting uglier as well as most of the Japanese options. There's nothing out there that excites me aesthetically other than Ferrari and at least BMW still makes the best drivers car.

Quite honestly if they weren't achieving record sales vs what else is on the market they would have issues worse than ugly cars.

A quick search gave me the following:

Quote:
Total 2023 full-year sales of 15,608,386 units were up 12.3% from 2022 year-end totals. Truck and SUV full-year sales were up 13.4% to 12,380,961 units, while passenger car sales were up 8.1% to 3,227,425 units for 2023.
Which given the economy the past couple of years has been in the doldrums and now recovering. Sales of most everything but housing is improving.

You have to look at multiple metrics in combination to form a realistic opinion on what's actually happening. Total sales YTD by itself won't mean much if all brands are experiencing increases. I think what's more telling is market share between brands.

Comparing current YTD market share vs. last year market share, BMW has stayed relatively flat at ~2.5%. However, in recent years, BMW has also become the #1 luxury brand in sales, overtaking Mercedes. So while there is a question of correlation vs. causation, one thing that can't be denied is that BMW is selling more cars than ever before and at a higher rate than its direct competitors - whether that's despite its current design language, or because of it, is hard to say.

Just like I said months ago. Those with leasings that come to expiration amongst others run to the dealers and order the newest and bestest. We will continue to have crappy looking BMW’s. As much as I thought that I’ll stay with the brand into the Porsche I’ll go. I want to have great looking vehicle in my eyes instead of “not that bad” one. I like how BMW moved with turbocharged M cars 4WD in them. Interior design and materials improved greatly, just don’t like all screen dashboards execution. But those grills and latest creations are… questionable? To me at least. Facelifted X5 is quite nice, on the other spectrum there’s nearly 3ton XM and one of the ugliest cars on the road I7. There will be lots of debating once I get bored with M5.

Yeah. Democracy should restart about 5 years after “do not eat” would stop appearing on bleach bottles.

I'm not bashing on Teslas, but stylistically, I find them extremely boring. Yet, they sell like crazy around here, and those that drive them really act like they're driving the definition of style. So, it's not surprising to me. People just take whatever is given to them now and play it up simply because it was their choice. Now that men can carry babies, women can have dicks, and being fat is healthy, there is no line anymore... no universally accepted definition of beauty. Beauty is immediately defined at the time of purchase, and the purchase was made because everyone else was doing it.

my friend who have Teslas usually tell me about the buying experience. apparently buying a Tesla is as easy as ordering stuff on Amazon. (not having to deal with pushy salesman, finance manager, etc.... plus signing dozens of times in person) My friend who bought one most recently could literally have done it without leaving her house. It was delivered to her driveway.

the car itself? well.. not so much... it's white and arrived very clean, so I guess it's alright.

Supply chain issues is still having impact and BMW has fared better than other makes (MB?) allowing them to sell more cars.

Generally, car manufacturers are selling as many cars as they make them which also explains the hot used car market. I have a friend who works at Toyota here and tells me that sales have been through the roof. They used to have Toyota Red Tag Days event to sell cars, but no more, not needed anymore.

I'm happy that BMW can sell their ugly designs to people on the strength of the brand. I, however, will not be purchasing anything from them unless it's beautiful.
