Here in Argentina, a 335i costs $79k and the M3 is priced at $130k... That's a $51k difference! I can't justify paying $50k extra for the M3! I know it's a great car, better than the 335i. But I can almost buy a brand new 130iM-Sport with that price difference!
Holy sh##, Martin, we can get a Porsche 911 Turbo for less than you can get a M3.

Personally, I have already spent well over the cost of a BASE M3 on my 335i, including the mods and labor... by the time I'm done, I will have spent FULLY LOADED M3 money on my 335i. Others on this board are probably just like me, some even worse.

Would I trade my car for a M3? No. Wait, yes. Maybe?

Hell yes...the car has a great feel and was much tighter than my 335 - the shorter travel on the clutch and shifter reminded me of my 97 M3. The sound of the V8 makes you giggle...power is very smooth and available - no surge of the turbo but more of a pull - it really feels like you can rev forever. The 335 "felt" like it could hang through mid-speed...maybe 3rd at 4000 RPM up through 90-100mph on the 335 - but the M3 seems to have a much broader sweet spot and better throttle response (part engine but also just simply the fly by wire throttle is set nice and twitchy).

From a looks perspective - i like the 335 better...the M3 sat a little tall...before I drove it - I was thinking about suspension, short shifter, and tuning on the 335...but the V8 may be the deciding factor - you can't easily make up that difference.

I don't think it is, but it depends on what you mean in tems of "worth". From a sheet price point, I think it is worth it. If you want to upgrade the 335 to truly outperform an M3, you'd probably drop 5-6k + on engine mods (dps, tune, fmic, exhaust, intake, etc...), another 1.5k on coilovers (or more if you really want push-button adjustability like the M3), plus you're looking at extra money for bigger wheels/tires and body kits + installation for all that and the car will probably still not beat the M3 around a track, though maybe in a straight line. you can easily spend 12-15k on upgrades and the sad fact is that your modded car won't retain value as well as the M3, so when you sell it, actual cost could be about the same, and I'm not even factoring in the value of having the warranty.

The reason I don't think it's worth it is because whether you spend 15k to mod or 20k on the M3, I think the overall enhancement of the driving experience, considering I don't track the car, is too marginal to justify paying so much more. This is especially true when you consider cheaper mods that won't really have you contending with an M3 the same as say the Dinan S2 package, but will get you a lot better than stock for a couple grand (just a tune and dps, for example).

I wouldn't buy the new M3 just because of the weight problem. Openly confirmed by BMW CEO that the new M cars are too heavy and too many cylinders. It has strayed from the original lightweight philosophy. That said I am looking foward towards the next M3.

So what's the next step? BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer is at least aware of this fact and mentioned to Auto Motor und Sport that he'd like to see the next batch of M cars lose a few cylinders, while simultaneously dropping the pounds. He points to the twin-turbocharged inline-six in the 135i, 335i and 535i as a good indication of what the future might hold, ...

I agree. I hope no one took my statement negatively. The current M3 is a great automobile but I like to see an leaner version of it in 5-6 years.

Yep, sad but true. Also car companies get alot of regulating these days as to what they are required to put in cars, air bags, safety things, emissions, chassis material etc. This all adds to weight in addition to the market competition.

personally I would enjoy a nice 2400 lb high revving inline 4 cylinder M3 like the e30, but I doubt that will ever happen again.

Someone else on this forum said it best when they were like "The e30 M3 was a track car with A/C and a radio thrown in to make it street legal. Every M3 since then has been a street car that just happens to perform really well at the track."
