my experience with the X5 4.8is

My buddy got the 2007 X5 4.8 i last summer. I always liked the way the truck looks. Hadnt had a chance to experience it upclose until yesterday.

The Pros:
1.) Massive space
2.) Does not feel that big from the inside though (may contradict #1, but that shows how efficiently BMW has disguised the *******
3.) Really good acceleration and handling + AWESOME brakes for something that massive and heavy
4.) lots of fancy gadgets (I dont really care that much about ancilliary equipment, since the novelty fades away REAL soon)

The Cons:
1.) its got the same # of miles as my car but the front axle clunks and creaks even over small bumps... its an SUV for crying out loud. Even my 335 with a stiffer setup dosent do that.
2.) the build quality is a big disappointment. the buttons and switches are soft and dont have that solid german feel to it. My car feels like a quality product in comparison
3.) the quality of materials is aweful.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

I knew you would knock the build quality becuase it is built here and not there.

if you are getting the same MPG is your car as a 4.8 X then something is really wrong with your car.

the buttons and switches/materials are the same or similar as used across the board from our 3 to the Alpina B7

I initially read his post like you, but looking back, I think he meant the amount of miles on the car - mileage (as far as how used it is).

I don't know what the newer X5's are like, but my family has a 2001 (original year iirc) and the car is as good as or better in some cases than the 3 series. Whereas my air conditioning is on 50%+ all the time in the summer the X5's on 3 out of about a dozen dashes is far too cold for me, the HVAC system in that car is INSANE, the vents are easily 2-3x the size of the ones in our car with airflow to match. Switches are identical, I'm not sure what you're smoking thinking they're different. Build quality is the same on both cars.

The only thing I agree with in your post is that yes, the front axle does clunk whenever you go over anything at all. It's disconcerting until you get used to it because you think something is broken at first.

I love my 2007 X5. I think it's a fantastic car. I don't think the build quality is that bad. Btw, the E70 only has a 3.0si and a 4.8i engine. The 4.8is
you are referencing in your title does not exist anymore. Maybe it's just a typo on your part.

Another SUV but, I just drove the new X6 (dealer near Bimmerfest yesterday)...and damn it was slow with the N54 in it. I mean ssssllllloowww. 4600lbs will do that. I love the looks btw!!!

The 4.4L TT is going to have to be a something special to get that moving. We shall see

The clunk is a known problem. The active sway bars has something loose inside, I would get it checked out by the Dealer.
