Woodcliff Lake, NJ – March 13, 2024… BMW of North America announced today the addition of Shell Recharge Solutions as a second eMobility provider, giving customers easy access to Shell Recharge, ChargePoint, EVgo, EVConnect, and Blink charging stations via the My BMW App. BMW drivers can now find, access, and charge at all affiliated locations via their My BMW app, with payments for all five providers automatically processed via the app. With this new agreement, BMW Charging now offers electric vehicle drivers easy and convenient access to one of the largest charging networks in North America with over 100,000 public charging points in the U.S. and Canada.

Shell Recharge Solutions’ virtual Mobility Service Provider (vMSP) not only streamlines the charging experience for BMW customers, but also eliminates the need to create separate accounts, and use separate apps, for each individual charging provider. Through the My BMW app, customers can now enjoy the benefits of both complimentary charging with Electrify America, and the networks of multiple providers across North America with Shell Recharge Solutions.

“Charging is an important part of creating a positive customer experience for the owners of electric vehicles,” said Shaun Bugbee, Executive Vice President, Operations, BMW of North America. “As a premium automaker, BMW’s goal is to also create a premium ownership experience for our customers, which means making the charging process as simple and convenient as possible.”

Shell Recharge is a pay-as-you-go program, so signing up is easy; customers simply need to add a credit card to their account. Charging at all locations is easy as well; park in front of the charging station, open the My BMW app, click ‘Charge Here’, and all relevant information for the specific charging station will be displayed, including ratings, reviews, and photos provided by Plug Share.

BMW’s current electric vehicle lineup includes the BMW i4 Gran Coupe, BMW i5 Sedan, and BMW i7 Sedan, as well as the BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicle. The company also offers five plug-in hybrid electric models including the BMW 330e Sedan, BMW 550e Sedan, BMW 750e Sedan, BMW X5 xDrive50e Sports Activity Vehicle and the BMW XM.

easier you make it the better.

side note, streamlining the process is great, but for me I need bigger charger network. Once that gets dialed in I think that would make things a lot easier to go full electric for me personally

When I look around my location, within 5 miles of my home I have Charge Point, electrify America, charge point, charge point, EV go, Blink, Electrify America, Tesla in that order from closest to furthest.

I live 35 miles north of Seattle. Every 2 miles, I can see another 5 chargers.

That’s good, make it easier like with Tesla. Fumbling around with credit cards and apps is not good. So I downloaded the app and checked some prices in my area - $0.99 session fee and $0.42-$0.59 / kWh. Sheesh. The SC near me is $0.19-$0.31 / kWh with no session fee. Charging at home for reference is about $0.11 / kWh. 4-5.5x the home price and about double SC rate is a bit ridiculous.

No, there won't be. This just integrates all the other popular public charger options into the MyBMW app and streamlines the process/payments.

I only charge at home. I’m 3 miles away from 350kw stations with EA. My 2 years free with BMW are a waste. I’m not taking 30 minutes out of my day to charge. I hated having to stop and get gas with my ICE car, too. Charging at home is a dream come true. I used EA once to get the experience. I did watch YouTube so it wasn’t a complete waste.

Totally agree. The thing about SC is they are near places we go to eat or shop. So it’s super convenient and during the summer months saves us upwards of $80/mo on our power bill. Also the advantage of using while shopping is the spots are closest to the stores so less hunting for a spot in a parking garage.

The only SC near me are at an outlet mall alongside the EA chargers. But EA, EV Go are at Target, Walmart, etc. The only place where I can find Tesla alone is out at a Casino and they are far away from the entrance close to the cheap gas.

I’m convinced tesla ownership was tailor made for the suburban lifestyle. The chargers in metro Atlanta follow the lifestyle. High end outdoor malls are the perfect spot to charge, followed by strip malls and Sbux/chipotle parking lots.

Pretty much the same here in Seattle, but there are non-Tesla chargers in the same spots. I think it’s because there are lots of EVs here and companies put chargers everywhere. The most upscale shopping is at the Bellevue Collection. They installed 15 ChargePoint level 2 so they work for everyone. There is a Tesla Showroom in that conglomerate of stores, hotels, restaurants, etc. They have 3 chargers that can only be used for their test drive cars.

Interesting to see the difference in areas of the country.

A few weeks ago on my way home from Vegas in my i4 M50, I saw that the popular Baker charging stations were full of Tesla's. Over 25 of them. At the same time the EA charging station that BMW uses only had 6 vehicles. Once other makes start using the NACS connector, some of those Tesla owners are going to be pissed when slow charging Chevy Bolts and other EVs are blocking their charging stations!
On a side note, the M50 performed flawlessly on the 650 mile trip. Had the cruise control set at 85 mph, and cruised to the top of the summit at 120, yet the thing turned phenomenal efficiency for those speeds.

There are 4 EA chargers at my gym which I go every morning at 7am. In my 4 weeks of ownership of my i7, there has always been at least one charger open at 7am everyday.

Only downside is I have to take it off the charger and park it in a normal parking in between my workout, which I don’t mind. Clocking 1500 miles my electric bill has gone down $150 as I don’t need to charge at home anymore nor do I want to with Free unlimited EA charging and my Tesla supercharger bill was roughly $150. $300 savings from switching from a Tesla Model Y. Factoring this, Im paying $200 more for my i7 vs Model Y. As long as I don’t move and stay a member of my gym, I’m very happy!

So if you don’t charge at home (which I assume does a number on the utility bill) how much are you paying in charging if you’re driving 1,000 miles a month?

I’m not asking for a math problem. I’m assuming someone in here fits that profile and can just answer from experience.

Is it really saving any money vs paying $150 - $200/month for gas?

Not asking to make a dig at EV. I’m really curious.

Im sure in the bigger populations it def makes sense for sure or at least starting to make sense. But more rural areas like mine the network just isn't there enough to really work for me personally.

You’re not going to find anyone in this forum who fits the bill - because you’d have to be a financial lunatic to charge outside the home 100% of the time without a free incentive period. On SC it’s about 60% the cost of gasoline. On these shell enabled chargers it’s the same if not more than equivalent gasoline.

I’ve seen other forums where someone was living off the SC as an Uber driver. They were about that 60% number.

The TCO gets smashed vs a hybrid or low cost efficient petrol/gas vehicle when you exclusively charge outside the home unless you qualify for a tax credit and/or you live in a place with a huge delta in electricity and fuel cost.

MyBMW gives you a decent estimate of monthly charges when you put in your electricity rate. Here is mine for February. This was for 353 miles traveled. I reset my data halfway through February, so double the numbers for a full month.
