NEWS
The grand opening of the promotional campaign for the 61st Macau Grand Prix was held on October 18 at Plaza Hollywood in Hong Kong, attracting a large number of residents and visitors who gained an in-depth overview of this internationally-renowned motor racing event in a lively and friendly atmosphere.

The Macau Grand Prix Committee participated in the roadshow organised by the Macau Government Tourist Office on October 18 and 19, and the two-day event included a number of interactive exhibition areas, and display panels telling the fascinating history of the event and its famous Guia Circuit. The event roadshow was also an occasion to display the race-winning Formula 3 car of Daniel Juncadella, who took victory in 2011, and the motorcycle Michael Rutter rode to his 2003 Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix win.

The promotion also featured race simulation games which allowed visitors to experience the excitement of the Grand Prix first hand, while Grand Prix tickets and other items were prizes in interactive games.

Macau is like the Las Vegas or Monaco in Asia. In terms of casino or Motorracing.
It was a really tight, twisty, and dangerous track.
Back in the days we saw legends like Schumi, Senna, Hakkinen raced here in Formula 3000 or F-3.

Formula One-bound teen Max Verstappen out to lift Macau Grand Prix crown

Teenager, who will race for Toro Rosso next season, is one of the big names coming for the 61st edition of the race

Formula One-bound teenager Max Verstappen will aim to end his career in open-wheel racing's junior ranks with the coveted Macau Grand Prix crown next month as organisers unveiled a "best of the best" line-up.

The 17-year-old Dutchman, who will be the youngest F1 driver next season, was the standout name as organisers revealed the drivers for the Formula Three grand prix, motorcycle grand prix and FIA World Touring Car Championship in the 61st edition of the annual extravaganza from November 13 to 16 yesterday.

Defending champion Alex Lynn will battle against the prodigy and Esteban Ocon, currently leading the FIA F3 European Championship as he tries to retain his title.

Due to limitations in the grid, we have to exclude a lot of drivers. Only the best of the best can attend the races

Verstappen has signed for the Toro Rosso team, with Red Bull junior team boss Helmut Marko comparing him to the legendary Ayrton Senna. He became the youngest driver to take part in an F1 Grand Prix when he drove in practice in Japan last weekend.

Mainlander Martin Cao Hongwei will try to repeat his success in this year's British Formula 3 - he won the championship this month - with his "home" advantage in the special administrative region.

The motorbike race sees Michael Rutter return to try to win a record ninth title in Macau, while Ian Hutchinson is back to defend his title. Scot Stuart Easton, a three-time winner, Michael Dunlop and veteran John McGuinness also return.

Macau will also host the grand finale of the FIA touring car championship with Sebastien Loeb, the nine-time FIA World Rally champion and Yvan Muller, the four-time WTCC champion the key names. Ma Qinghua, who became the first Chinese to win on the WTCC circuit this year, also competes.

Joao Manuel Costa Antunes, coordinator of the Macau Grand Prix Committee, described the line-up as "sensational".

"Due to limitations in the grid, we have to exclude a lot of drivers. Only the best of the best can attend the races," he said.

"If you go through the entry lists, you can see there are many champions. Even in the other races, like the Macau GT Cup, we have the best drivers, because everybody wants to come to Macau."

Return to the legendary street circuit.

BMW DTM drivers Marco Wittmann and Augusto Farfus race in Macau in the BMW Z4 GT3.

BMW DTM drivers Marco Wittmann and Augusto Farfus are returning to a legendary venue for the end of the 2014 motorsport season. From 13th to 16th November, the newly-crowned DTM champion and the man who finished runner-up in the 2013 DTM will take on the street circuit in Macau at the wheel of two BMW Z4 GT3s run by the AAI Rstrada team. The team, which lined up in the former Portuguese colony with BMW last year and has been competing in the Asian Le Mans Series in 2014, will field two cars at the Macau GT Cup, which sees some of the top GT3 cars in the world go head to head on the demanding “Guia Circuit”, the iconic street circuit through the heart of Macau.

“I am excited to be returning to Macau after a few years away, and to be able to drive there in a GT3 car,” said Wittmann. “In 2011, I won the qualifying race in a Formula 3 car, set the fastest race lap and finished third to claim a spot on the podium in the main race in Macau. As far as I am concerned, it is not only the best street circuit in the world, but also one of the most exciting racetracks around. I can hardly wait to get back out on this awesome circuit with the BMW Z4 GT3.”

Farfus was a regular in Macau during his time in the FIA World Touring Car Championship, as it traditionally provided the venue for the season finale of the WTCC. The Brazilian won twice at the “Guia Circuit”, his most recent success there coming at the wheel of the BMW 320si WTCC in 2009. Like Wittmann, Farfus is also really looking forward to returning to Macau: “This circuit was a huge challenge for us drivers in a WTCC car. It will be a real adventure to race there in the considerably more powerful BMW Z4 GT3. The atmosphere in Macau and, of course, the track itself have something magical about them, which you do not find anywhere else in the world. I can hardly wait to be back in Macau.”

Macau has been the scene of major success for BMW in the past. In 2005, 2006 and 2007, Andy Priaulx was crowned World Touring Car Champion there, usually in dramatic fashion. BMW drivers claimed five race wins in the WTCC in Macau between 2005 and 2009. In the history of the “Guia Race” for touring cars, BMW has won 21 races since 1980.

One of the Z4s racing down the street:

And GT news from today:
2014-11-14

Three-time race winner Edoardo Mortara took provisional pole position today in the first of two Qualifying sessions for Sunday’s Macau GT Cup. Despite clouting the Armco barrier during his first run, the Italian was able to find some clear track to set a lap of 2:18.230, quicker than Maro Engel’s pole-setting time last year.

Said Mortara: “I was very, very lucky with traffic in my two attempts in the session. In the first one, I had no traffic but I managed to put it in the wall which was my mistake and not optimal. We could have already set the benchmark. I had to come in put on another set of tyres, which was not planned. Then I went out again and obviously when had I crashed the car it was quite hard so it was quite bent. This is where you see the Audi quality. I crashed very, very hard into the wall but still the car was able to behave pretty normally. That allowed us to have another attempt. We had no traffic and we did the lap. I’m pretty sure we can go much quicker [in final qualifying] as I crashed very hard. But tomorrow is another day and different conditions, so you start a little bit from zero.”

New Zealand’s Earl Bamber was second fastest at the end of the session in the Porsche GT3 R, but still more than half a second off the Audi R8 LMS Ultra driver. Said Bamber: “It was a fantastic qualifying for us. It was a bit difficult as we had some traffic in the last sector which cost us, but that’s the game in Macau. I think it’s really great to be P2, especially for LKM as it’s their home race. It’s good to be quick but there’s still another qualifying tomorrow so we have to shoot up the car a bit more and work on it. Roll on tomorrow, and we’ll be charging. Or maybe just follow the master!”

Engel, in the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 was third quickest, a second and a half off provisional pole having topped Thursday’s free practice. Mortara’s team mate Laurens Vanthoor could not match the Italian’s incredible pace, booking a provisional second row start.

The trilling session saw Mortara initially shoot to the top of the time sheets, but his team mate Vanthoor bettered his lap to take provisional pole after the man dubbed ‘Mr. Macau’ hit the barrier and had to pit.

With ten minutes of the session remaining, several drivers posted quicker times, Engel grabbing provisional pole with a lap in under two minutes 19 seconds which was immediately bettered by Mortara. Bamber then bettered his time to go second.

As the minutes counted down, Bamber’s LKM Racing team mate Siu Yuk Lung and Modena Motorsports’ Wayne Shen both made contact with the barriers, bringing out the yellow flags and meaning no driver could better his time.

With a dramatic few minutes between the green and chequered flags, several drivers put in a final dash but nobody could touch the master of the Guia Circuit.

The second Qualifying session for the Macau GT Cup will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 12:50 local time.

Farfus and Wittmann race the BMW Z4 GT3 in Macau.
Just one month after the 2014 DTM season drew to a close, BMW DTM drivers Marco Wittmann and Augusto Farfuswere back in action on the legendary street circuit in Macau. They raced in the fiercely-competitive Macau GT Cup at this weekend’s iconic Macau Grand Prix.

(BMW Motorsport Nov 16, 2014)

They were at the wheels of two BMW Z4 GT3s, run by AAI Rstrada within the BMW Motorsport Customer Racing programme. Farfus ended the race at the demanding “Guia Circuit” in fifth place, with Wittmann coming home seventh.

The Macau GT Cup has established itself as a key date on the racing calendar for GT teams around the world. Each year some of the top GT3 cars gather for one last head-to-head at the end of the motorsport season. Farfus and Wittmann were making their debuts in this particular race, but both were familiar with the narrow street circuit in Macau, having raced there in the past. Farfus tasted success there with BMW in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (FIA WTCC), while Wittmann’s previous outing came in a Formula 3 car. Today marked the first time they had teamed up with AAI Rstrada in the BMW Z4 GT3.

Farfus and Wittmann qualified eighth and tenth. Sunday morning’s race consisted of 12 laps through the city’s narrow, crash barrier-lined roads. Farfus made a good start, climbing straight into sixth place. The Brazilian matched the pace of the leading group throughout the entire race. On lap ten he moved up another place into fifth, a position he maintained until the end of the race. Wittmann defended tenth at the start. He then fought his way into ninth in the final third of the race, before benefitting from a crash involving two of the cars ahead of him. The German eventually crossed the finish line in seventh. Victory went to Mercedes driver Maro Engel.

“I did not take any major risks at the start, but was still able to make up two places,” said Farfus. “Our race speed was very good today, unlike yesterday’s qualifying. Given the circumstances and the little experience our team has compared to the opposition, fifth place feels like a victory. Importantly, we were able to gather a lot of data for future outings. It was great to return to Macau after four years.”

Wittmann summed up his event: “That was not an easy weekend for us. The opposition has a lot of experience on this track, and we were making our first appearance here with this team. We improved in the race, compared to qualifying, and can be very happy with fifth and seventh. The main thing is that we gained a lot of experience this weekend. It was great fun coming back to Macau – the best street circuit in the world, with this fantastic atmosphere.”
