Automotive News is reporting that BMW has greenlighted a 1 Series Sedan on the UKL platform, meaning the entry level sedan will be FWD. We bet that the "1 Series Sedan" part of the title grabbed your attention, as BMW enthusiasts have been clamoring for a small sports sedan ever since the 3 Series began hitting the gym too hard and packing on some extra weight/size. We're also sure that many of you were then disappointed to read the letters F W D. Unfortunately, the writing's been on the wall and we've been reporting about a FWD future for the 1 Series since early 2010.

What's more concerning is how this portends the future of the 2 Series. The first generation 2 Series Coupe to be revealed next month rides on the current 1 Series' RWD platform, but what happens to the second generation 2 Series once the 1 Series lineup switches to RWD? Will it also turn FWD since the 1 and 2 Series are presumed to continue sharing platforms? If that's the logical conclusion to be drawn, this would leave a model lineup where the 3 and 4 Series will be the smallest RWD sedans and coupes available. We cringe at the idea that there will be no option for enthusiasts desiring an entry level RWD sports sedan or coupe bearing the BMW roundel. For once, we hope that our logic fails us and BMW proves this wrong.

The FWD 1 Series Sedan is said to be launching in 2017, ahead of the third generation 1 Series Hatchback, which will switch from its current RWD layout to FWD. The first of the FWD 1 Series models to hit the market will be the 1 Series GT when it makes its debut next year.

Can't say it's a surprise with MB and Audi all going FWD with their compact offerings. I'm sure they'll have a 4 wheel drive version too.

God help us all

I sincerely hope they don't, as a 1er sedan in 5 years would be perfect for me...

If the 3 and 4 series are the smallest RWD cars available, then not only am I never buying a new BMW but I am done being a BMW enthusiast. I am tired of getting shafted at the release of every new model.

BMW has too many models IMO...

Why can't it just be a mini cooper sedan that is FWD..

Let's see how close BMW gets to their hallowed 50/50 weight distribution with this one!

And the slippery slope gets steeper... So now they follow the lead of Audi and Mercedes?

I like to see the Ultimate Driving Machine commercial for this model.

I think the F20 sucks but I'm really, really going to miss it when this wrong-wheel-drive crap comes to market.

Wouldnt that be VW?? With Audi being Lexus.

I dont mind if the 1 series goes FWD/AWD as it will help spread out develpment costs for Mini, and if Mini is anything to go by it should drive just fine. Plus, the 2 series coupe/ gran coupe will remain RWD.

I like the picture and the frown lol.

I guess people will opt for xdrive. If the current m135i slowly turns into fwd rather than becoming part of a rwd 2 series line up-that would be just sad. Im betting no ///M lineup as well.

We dont make fast and furious cars should be the motto.

My wild guess (and hope) is that the future BMW line up in the compact segment might look like this:

1-Series (UKL platform):

3-door Hatchback FWD
5-door Hatchback FWD
4-door Sedan FWD
5-door GT FWD

2-Series (hopefully built on a seperate RWD platform)

2-door Coupe RWD
4-door Gran Coupe RWD
2-door Convertible RWD
Hyundai Veloster type vehicle RWD?

And probably some more vehicles that are still not green lighted. Personally, I am convinced the 2-Series will be the entry level RWD BMW.

I'll be hanging onto my 135i e82 for a while then .. I really wish they would sacrifice slightly better sales and efficacy just to keep the RWD platform and keep the current Bmw Enthusiasts happy

Eeks, FWD eh. Sucks for BMW's imagine, but if they make an Xdrive, I'm sure it will still attract a good crowd.

With that being said, a FWD version will probably draw a lot of people who just want to say "I drive a BMW".

I wonder what an estimated MSRP would be....

You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!

what a massive failure.

guess i will be enjoying my new 1er as much as i can. If this turns out to be the case, the RWD 2-series (waiting for the M2) will likely be my LAST BMW.....the 3-series is too bloated to own and i'd rather go back to Audi and buy an RS3 Sedan by the time all this happens! (2016-2017)? I don't like big cars....
