Question to admins – do we need a member rating system?

There were numerous discussions about ‘nose’ useless posting here. Perhaps we may look at member rating system similar to: http://my.is/forums/index.php?

At this Lexus IS forum any member can “approve” and “disapprove” any given post, so statistically over the time each member has its own reputation. I’ve seen some members even with negative rating over there (still posting crap, but you at least have some extra hintch to ignore it). You prohibited to give approval to the same member before you approve some other member.

As a drawback, there is some constant soliciting for feedback, but by law of large numbers it works just fine.

I think it will be beneficial for new members who may don’t know who is who there. Not pointing any fingers although it was shim, ha-ha

i'm not a fan of the idea, to be honest with you. i wouldn't care if it was implemented, but i don't think i'd ever use it. plus, it could very easily be misused.

I love the idea. We need it here badly. Some members reply to every topic, no matter how useless, with more useless stuff. I'd like some way for members to know who's actually adding value around here.

Your post was approved.

Any system can be abused, but statistically it will work (if we have enough traffic here)

Most of what shim posts in usually in the off topic board. So, if you dont wanna read the useless posts, dont venture in there. Its the dark side!

I agree with Vlad - who cares about the reputation of posters...even if it is contingent on other members?

If a crappy, useless post was made, how is someone's poor ranking going to thwart me from reading his/her post effectively? Likewise, if someone with a renown reputation makes a stupid post, I would feel gulled.

If you really want a clean board, just go dictatorship-style and ban every single idiot who posts worthless bilge not germane to anything.

It isn't necessarily a bad idea, but you would have to set it so that you couldn't vote on another member until you have like 100 posts or some other higher number. Also you would want to set it so that no one could vote on the same member more than once. Those two rules would make it much more difficult to abuse the system.

I have found a much more useful method of dealing with people that post irritating replies to every thread. I just add them to my ignore list. After you add someone to your ignore list it is like they don't even exist. Their posts are automatically erased from every thread you read, just like they never posted anything. It really is nice.

You can remove someone from your ignore list just as easily as you added them. Plus, if you really want to see one of their posts, you can just click on a link that says show the particular post you are interested in.

But then surely the type of people who you are trying to prevent abusing the forum would post loads of useless posts just so they could get to a level where they were allowed to vote on others, just because they have nothing better to do.

Actually, after some usage of my rusty little brain that I recovered from the floor:

1) Implement a system where posters can be reviewed/ranked according to the quality/informative nature of their posts from say, a scale of 0-10. The poster's average is calculated over time and the system should have anti-exploiting measures such as tracking who's voting for who and votes cast by people with high ranks (especially admins) have a heavier weight than those votes cast by newbies. Thus, newbies can't "farm" high ranking posters out of other newbies in a "farming" scheme.

2) Allow users to modify their viewing settings. Set a default number where only posts by users with a minimum of X.X ranking can be seen while all other posts are ignored. Thus, if I didn't want to see Sound of Speed's crap or Shim's crap, I would increase my viewing settings from 0.0 to say, 3.0 (all posts from users below 3.0 ranking will not be shown).

3) Newbies who want to make a post to be viewed by the elite (who most likely would have filtered out crappy posts) can post in a special forum where all posts are shown, regardless of viewing settings.

In a nutshell, stupid posts are avoided with the proper, individual settings (someone who doesn't like to see garbage doesn't have to while someone who doesn't mind won't be affected).

So when I click on a thread about upcoming E90 models, I won't have to see a 15-page thread that's 90% filled with total crap but instead I'll just have to go through probably 1 page with 20 very-well constructed posts with good information from great guys like E90Fleet.

Professor Squawks, out.

I don't need another place where I am judged or rated.

That would be better than people creating multiple accounts just so they can artificially inflate their rating. If you make the post count requirement high enough, it will discourage people from doing that. You could even set it at 1,000 if you wanted.

I still think the "Ignore" function is the best way to deal with people you don't like.

I don't think any rating system is necessary. An Ignore function would work if you really don't like the way someone posts but I haven't seen many people here that causes problems. This is the best forum I have been a part of.

There already is an ignore function. Just go to the person's profile page and add them to your ignore list.

I accept that completely, and am not disagreeing that setting a nominal post count would prevent/reduce abuse, but set it too high and there will only be a handful of people who can actually vote (and surely a reasonable percentage of those still would inlcude people that most would be giving the 'no' vote), thus making the system not entirely democratic.

Absolutely.

I think almost everyone here is courteous and helpful. I have learned a lot on this forum and felt like it was a nice place to be. Other forums aren't half as nice or useful. A rating system would be a waste here. If it ever gets that bad, I'll probably just leave. But I don't see that happening.

Hi, I am new to these discussions and find that although there is a lot of non-sense information, there are comments that some members make that have taught me many things about my E90 (even though I read the whole manual). What I get most annoyed with is with topics that keep appearing every time a new member joins. I am somewhat neutral in a rating system but would suggest having some checks in which the system makes you make a search before starting some new topic.

BTW, I agree with SDORN that one of the best way to deal with users that abuse the system may be to have options to add users to an ignore list.

Thanks for all the really nice information.

The trick would be to find that balance point where it is low enough so that there are still plenty of potential voters but high enough to discourage people opening multiple accounts to abuse the voting system. But like I said above, the "Ignore" function already built into the system makes all of this pointless.
