Question: Replacing headlamp switch.

What would happen if you replaced a headlight switch which does not have "auto" with a switch which does?

Seach was unsuccessful.

I think that you would have just installed a head light switch that now has an "auto" function that does absolutely nothing for your non auto light equipped car.

It's gunna take more than the switch to make the "auto" lights work

I figured the 'auto' feature would not work, but what about the adaptive headlight feature? I can't see BMW supplying Xenons with and without that feature.

I can see them having adaptive xenon headlights and non-adaptive xenon headlights. The former cost FAR more. Using the switch, I bet, isn't going to do a thing.

Not all xenon-equipped BMW's have adaptive headlights. My 328 has xenon's, but no adaptive headlight feature.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I suspect that all Xenon's are shipped with the adaptive feature however this feature only activates when the light switch is in A 'auto'.

I was wondering about this after I read about the rear fog lamp modification where people just change out the switch with the Euro version.

All Xenons are self leveling, and I would be surprised if BMW went to the expense to source Xenons which did and did not have the adaptive feature. It would be cheaper for BMW to just design the feature on the dashboard switch.

I suppose I could tell if the part#'s for Xenons were different?

Does that make sense?

Adaptive xenons must have a fairly complex set of moving parts/electronics in order to do what they do. They're not going to use those by default.

REALOEM suggests there's a kit (part# 63130404183) for those w/out rain sensing wipers, but you need the footwell control module (not sure what that is).

Yes, that's a fair assumption. Don't all xenon-equipped models come with auto-lighting though? I'm not fully sure of the changes (if any) they made to the lighting controls to pre-LCI 3's.

If true though, I don't see why BMW would not just activate them in all models equipped with xenons (since the parts installed would be the same).. other than making more money on an upgrade option .

False. If you have Xenon equipped lights( 06 and above) you have adaptive headlights, in the US that is. Also, your lights MUST be on Auto for the adaptive headlights to work.

In the U.S. the adaptive feature is part of the premium package so yes you can have Xenons but unless you have the premium package your switch will not have selection "A" for auto which is left of center and activates the feature.

I don't think this has ever come up on the forum since most people order the premium package to begin with.

Right- this must differ between US and CDN models then. I'm not too sure about pre-LCI 328's with xenons, but LCI 328's with xenons come without adaptive headlights (you can upgrade to get them though).
